Atlanta Gladiators News Release
ESTERO, FL - The Florida Everblades scored the final four goals of the game and beat the Gwinnett Gladiators 5-2 on Friday night at the Germain Arena. Ed Pasquale (4-3-0) made 30 saves in the losing effort as the Gladiators drop to 22-23-2-5 on the season with the loss. Gwinnett and Florida will battle again on Saturday night at 7:00 p.m. at the Germain Arena.
Florida took a 1-0 lead on the Gladiators early in the first period. Elgin Reid ripped a shot over the shoulder of Pasquale at 1:07 of the first period. Matt Beca and Alexandre Imbeault collected the assists on the goal setting up Reid on the marker.
Michael Forney answered midway through the first period for Gwinnett. Forney picked up a drop pass just inside the Everblades blue line and roofed the puck over the shoulder of Florida netminder Jaroslav Janus for the goal. Akim Aliu dropped the puck off for Forney after Cody Brookwell moved the puck up ice to Aliu to collect the assists on the goal at 9:33 of the first.
Fifty-three seconds into the second, Andy Brandt found a rebound and beat Janus to put Gwinnett up 2-1, its only lead of the game. Dustin Cameron's one-timer from the right circle off a feed from Forney clanked off the cross bar right to a wide open Brandt to set up the goal.
The Everblades then answered with three straight goals before the end of the second to take a 4-2 lead into the second intermissions. Imbeault collected his second point of the night, rolling the puck past Pasquale at 7:37 of the second period to tie the game at two. Francis Lemieux and Beca had the assists on the goal.
Beca then collected his third point of the game and his first goal of the contest ripping a one-time slap shot from the left side past Pasquale from the back-door on the power play. Lemieux and J.F. David had the helpers on the 5-on-3 power play goal for Florida at 11:47 of the second period.
Jared Staal's sixth goal of the season with 1:06 left in the second pushed the Everblades lead to two goals. Staal walked in over the Gladiators blue line and ripped a slapshot from the right side past Pasquale. Bobby Raymond fed Staal to set up the goal for Florida.
Florida added another marker early into the third period off the stick of Tony Mosey to push their lead to 5-2. Mosey found a rebound in the slot and ripped the rebound past Pasquale for the final goal of the game. Alex Hutchings and Ian McDonald collected the assists on the goal at 5:38 of the third period.
Gwinnett finished scoreless on three power play chances with their first extra man opportunity coming midway through the third period. Florida went 1-for-7 on the power play in the win.
The Gladiators are the AA affiliate of the Atlanta Thrashers and play all home games at the 11,355-seat Arena at Gwinnett Center, located just off I-85 on Sugarloaf Parkway in Duluth.
