Gladiators Fall to Checkers 4-3

CHARLOTTE, NC - The Gwinnett Gladiators dropped a 4-3 decision to the Charlotte Checkers on Friday night at the Time Warner Cable Arena. Tomas Zaborski notched the game winner for the Checkers with just 7 seconds left in the third period tucking the puck inside the post to the short side past Gladiators netminder Kevin Nastiuk. David Rutherford and Julian Brouillette had the assists on the game winning goal for the Checkers. With the loss, the Gladiators fall into fifth place in the South Division with a 11-11-4 record.

Jeff Dunne's second goal of the season gave the Gladiators a 1-0 lead 7:47 into the first period. Dunne picked up his own rebound in the right wing circle and whipped the puck through the legs of Checkers netminder Maxime Daigneault for the marker. Dunne's goal came unassisted for Gwinnett.

Charlotte equalized the contest at one with less than a minute left in the second period. Peter Tsimikalis was able to pick up a rebound in the slot and flick the puck past Nastiuk for the Checkers first goal of the contest. Working in on an odd man ruch, Tsimikalis took an outlet pass from Ryan Hillier before picking up his own rebound and flicking the puck past Nastiuk for the goal. Tomas Zaborsky also had an assist on the goal for the Checkers with just 55 seconds left in the second period.

Matthew Ford gave the Checkers their first lead of the game at the 5:25 mark of the third period. Parked all alone in the slot, Ford took his time before flicking the puck past Nastiuk for the marker. Tsimikalis and Bayrack collected the assists on the second power play goal of the game for the Checkers.

Chris Cava's second goal of the season tied the game at two midway throught the thrid period. Cava's shot from the point hit a Checkers defenseman in the slot and fluttered over the shoulder of Daigneault for the marker. gwinnett got assists from Travis Fuller and Brandon Kaleniecki on the marker.

Charlotte regained the lead at 3-2 on a penalty shot goal at 10:52 of the third period. Ford added his second goal of the game on the penalty shot as he ripped a slap shot past Nastiuk for the goal. Ford was hauled down on a breakway by Scott Marchesi to set up the penalty shot for the Checkers. The penatly shot was the 6th that the Gladiators have been involved in this season.

Pat Bateman equalized the contest for Gwinnett at three goals apiece with his 10th goal of the season putting home a second effort in the slot in front of the Charlotte net. Jordan Fox added an assist on the goal for Gwinnett at 12:56 of the third period.

Nastiuk finsished with 28 saves in the loss while Gwinnett went 0-for-4 on the power play. Charlotte notched two goals on seven chances on the man advantage.

Gwinnett returns to action on Sunday when the Gladiators host the Elmira Jackals at 4:05 p.m. at the Arena at Gwinnett Center.
