Checkers Suspend Joe Zappala

CHARLOTTE, N.C. - General manager and head coach of the Charlotte Checkers Derek Wilkinson announced today that the team has suspended forward Joe Zappala.

Zappala informed Wilkinson after the completion of Wednesday night's game that he would be headed overseas to continue his hockey career. He has been placed on the Checkers suspended list and his rights are maintained by the club.

Zappala, 6-foot-0, 205 pounds suited up in nine games for the Checkers this season totaling two goals and zero assists with 14 penalty minutes. He played the last two seasons with the Reading Royals. During that time, he suited up in 115 games scoring 41 goals and 47 assists for 88 points with 200 penalty minutes.

The Checkers are in their 16th season of play as a member of the ECHL. The next home game will take place on Dec. 19 against the Gwinnett Gladiators at 7:00 p.m. start. In the team's 15-year history, the Checkers have made the playoffs 11 times including four consecutive playoff appearances to date. The Checkers are entering their fourth season of play at Time Warner Cable Arena.
