Johnstown Chiefs News Release

Wheeling, W. Va. - The Johnstown Chiefs made a big statement in Friday night's battle for first in the North Division as they dominated the Wheeling Nailers 7-3.

Johnstown found the recipe that had worked so well for them earlier in the season, and served some humble pie to the host Nailers in the first period. Ryan Garlock, in his third game back with the team after a stint with Syracuse in the AHL, put the Chiefs on the board 2:14 into the game. He took a quick shot from right along the left wing boards that caught David Brown by surprise. Randy Rowe and Andy Contois assisted on Garlock's seventh of the season.

The second-year center made it 2-0 with his eighth goal of the season at 6:18 with a rising backhand that beat Brown to the glove side. The Chiefs peppered the Wheeling net with 21 shots in the first, their most in a period this season.

Unsatisfied with the two goal lead, the Johnstown offense kept the pressure on in a big way during the second period. It was Blair Yaworski who shouldered the scoring load in the middle frame as he scored once, unassisted, at even strength and once on the power play with help from Kyle Bushee and Jon Landry. The goals were Yaworski's second and third of the season. Wheeling finally cracked Kris Mayotte with a power play goal on a tip-in goal from Bryan Ewing off of a shot by Elgin Reid.

Yaworski wasted no time in completing his hat trick, picking up another unassisted goal 59 seconds into the final frame to extend the Chiefs' lead to 5-1. The rookie from Yale wasn't done on the score sheet, though, as he set up a power play goal by Wes Clark at 1:49, and then scored his fourth of the night at 4:09. Clark assisted on the goal to give him his first multi-point night as a Chief, and Petr Pohl picked up his 17th assist of the year. Trailing 7-1, Wheeling tried to mount a comeback with power play goals from Mitch Ganzak (6:24) and Reid Cashman (8:45), but the task was far too tall.

Mayotte earned his 13th win of the season with 33 saves, and the Chiefs' power play finished the night 2-for-6.
