Bakersfield Condors News Release
BAKERSFIELD, Calif. - G Yutaka Fukufuji stopped 44 of 45 shots to lead the Bakersfield Condors to a 3-1 victory against the Idaho Steelheads before 4,450 fans at Qwest Arena in Boise Saturday night.
2008-12-01 weekly fujThe Steelheads (15-11-2, 32pts) generated the majority of the scoring chances in the first period, out-shooting the Condors, 11-4, but Fukufuji denied Idaho on each attempt, keeping the scoreless tie intact through one frame.
The Condors (9-13-4, 22pts) turned it on in the second period, netting two goals less than two minutes apart to take a 2-0 lead. RW Chad Painchaud opened the scoring at 6:20 with a shorthanded breakaway goal after F Matt Pope tipped it ahead of the crowd in the neutral zone. Just 1:59 later, recently-acquired rookie F Nick Pernula found the loose puck on the corner of the crease and roofed it home for his first ECHL point. Painchaud and D Martin Frechette registered the assists on the goal. Fukufuji stopped all 18 Idaho shots in the second stanza and the Condors held a two-goal lead heading into the final frame.
Idaho got on the board 8:44 into the third period with a goal from F Bryan McGregor to pull within one, 2-1. However, with less than a minute remaining in the game, F Matt Pope wristed in his team-leading 14th goal of the season on the power play, sealing the 3-1 win for the Condors and setting up the rubber match between these two teams Saturday night.
