Elmira Jackals News Release


Elmira, NY- The Elmira Jackals, proud member of the ECHL, are pleased to announce that their AHL affiliate, the Binghamton Senators, have assigned Derek Couture and Nathan Lutz to the Jackals line up. Both players along with Moises Gutierrez are expected to play in Elmira after the Christmas break.

Couture, a 6'1'' 205 pound winger from Calgary, Alberta has spent three season in the American Hockey League. In two seasons with Omaha. Last season Couture netted 10 goals and added eight assists for 18 points to go along with 129 minutes in penalties in 76 games played for the Quad City Flames. Couture makes the trip back to the United States after skating in 10 games this season in Austria.

The B-Sens have also sent help to the Jackals blue line with the addition of Nathan Lutz who's entering his eighth season of professional hockey. The native of Mistatim, Saskatwean played for Jackals Head Coach Steve Martinson in the 2005-2006 and 2006-2007 seasons for the Rockford IceHogs. Nathan is a former UHL All Star and Captain of the Rockford IceHogs. In has last season UHL season, the 6'2'' 225 pounder played in 76 games where he had 11 goals and 35 assists to accompany 175 minutes in penalties. Last season Lutz played in Denmark for the Rodovre Mighty Bulls for 46 games where he tallied a 30 point season.

"Both players are physical and will provide leadership and experience." Said Jackals Head Coach Steve Martinson. "Couture is hard nosed winger that can score goals. Nathan is a top player at both ends of the rink. He is extremely physical while being able to quarterback a power play." Martinson added.

NEXT UP: The Jackals are in action tonight when they make their first visit of the season to South Carolina for a 7:05 p.m. face off with the Stingrays. The Jackals are back in action tomorrow night to finish of the double header with the second place team in the South Division. The Jackals finish their Southern swing on Sunday with a stop in Gwinnett to take on the Gladiators at 4:05 p.m.
