
Gladiators drop Exhibition Game to Augusta, 4-3 in Shootout

The Gwinnett Gladiators dropped a 4-3 decision to the Augusta Lynx in a shootout on Saturday night at the James Brown Arena in the Gladiators only pre-season game in preparation for the 2006-07 season.
The Gladiators took a 1-0 lead on a goal by Mike Vigilante at the midway point of the first period on the power play. Bruce Mulherin collected an assist as he centered the puck to a waiting Vigilante in the slot for the goal. Brett Pilkington also had an assist on the tally.
Augusta took a 2-1 lead through two periods as Shane Hynes and Joe Cardarelli scored within four minutes of each other midway though the second period. Nathan Saunders set up Hynes for the first tally at the 9:01 mark of the middle stanza.
Gwinnett swapped goalies midway through the period as Dave Caruso relieved Dan Turple at the 10:05 mark of the second. Turple finished with 13 saves for the Gladiators in the contest.
Dirk Southern set up Cardarelli for the Lynx go-ahead goal at the 14:10 mark of the second period. Cardarelli ripped a slapshot past Caruso from the left wing point off a face off for the goal.
Brandon Kaleniecki tied the game at two, collecting a rebound in the slot and flipping the puck past Augusta netminder Brett Jaeger. Brian Teixeira and Justin Cross collected the assists on the goal.
Bruce Mulherin gave the Gladiators a 3-2 lead 10:37 into the third period as he redirected Mike Vigilante's pass behind Jaeger for the go-ahead goal.
Augusta tied the game at three and sent the contest to overtime as Louis Goulet centered the puck off of Jon Awe's skate and past Caruso for the marker. Ryan Lang and Will Bodine collected the assists on the maker.
Justin Cross collected the only goal for the Gladiators in the shootout while Ryan Lang, Joe Cardarelli and J.B. Bittner scored for Augusta for the win.
The game saw 29 penalties called between the two teams with three power play goals scored in the contest. Gwinnett finished the contest out shooting the Lynx by a 37-33 margin.
