Dayton Bombers News Release
Youngstown, OH- The Dayton Bombers defeated the Youngstown Steelhounds of the Central Hockey League 4-3 in a shootout on Friday night at the Chevy Centre in Youngstown, Ohio.
For the second consecutive preseason game, the Bombers fell behind 1-0 in the first period. Four minutes after the Steelhounds took the early lead, Bombers defenseman Brad Farynuk tied the game at 1-1 on the power play. Youngstown would re-take the lead at 2-1 with a short handed goal by Chris Shaffer, but Petr Pohl would answer Shaffer with a shorty of his own moments later. Pohl was able to capitalize off of a Steelhounds defensive zone turnover by taking the puck in towards the net, making a beautiful move to the back hand and sliding it by Steelhounds starting goaltender, Brian Gratz. The score remained tied 2-2 after 20 minutes of play.
In the second period, the Bombers found themselves falling behind once again. Youngstown would take a 3-2 lead on a power play goal by Dan Esdale. Esdale jumped off of the bench and picked up a loose puck in the slot then lifted it over Bombers starting goaltender, Dan LaCosta. Once again the Bombers would have an answer and find a way to tie the game at 3-3. Defenseman Nick Tuzzolino took a simple little wrist shot from the top of the left wing circle and with a screen set up in front of the Steelhounds net, slid it past the pads of goaltender Cory Wogtech near the end of the second. The game would remain tied going into the third period at 3-3.
In the third both teams had a number of chances at even strength and on the power play. Despite Youngstown dominating the shot total, LaCosta stopped everything he saw and the game headed into Overtime. The extra five minutes were not enough and both teams were on their way to the shootout.
The story of the shootout was the stellar net play of Dan LaCosta. He seemed to be in the minds of all of the Steelhounds players. Although two shots did hit the posts, LaCosta didn't panic and stopped all of the other three he faced. Bombers forward Jamie Herrington would make it stand by scoring the only goal for either team in the shootout. Herrington took his time and made a highlight reel type of play by faking a deke to the back hand, then sliding the puck over to his forehand and past Steelhounds goaltender Jamie Symington. The Bombers jumped off the bench in elation and went to congratulate LaCosta for his efforts in leading them to the 4-3 shootout victory.
The Bombers return home for their final preseason game as they take on the Cincinnati Cyclones at the Kettering Recreation Center at 7:00 p.m. Tickets are available at the door at $10 for adults and $5 for youths.
