Chiefs defeat Wheeling 5-3 in preseason action

Johnstown, PA - The Johnstown Chiefs downed the Wheeling Nailers 5-3 in an exhibition game at the Cambria County war Memorial.

Johnstown jumped out to a lead at 2:11 of the first period when P.J. Atherton threw the puck behind the Wheeling net and when Wheeling goaltender Kevin Schieve tried to play it out to his own defenceman, he misplayed the puck and it landed on the stick of Chiefs' forward Jean Desrocher who backhanded it into the vacant net. Just 4:10 seconds later, Doug Andress carried the puck off the right wing boards and into the slot and backhanded the puck past Schieve. Seventeed seconds later, Chiefs' rookie Stanislav Lascek took a one-timer on a pass from Gus Katsuras and fired it passed Schieve to put Johnstown up 3-0. Katsuras scored the fourth Chiefs' goal when he banged in a pass from Radek Smolenak at 8:09.

Wheeling's Ned Havern scored his second power-play goal in as many games against the Chiefs, putting a quick wrist shot over the blocker of Chiefs' goaltender Morgan Cey, who replaced Gerald Coleman just nine seconds earlier.

Lascek fired s loose puck from just inside the blue line into the open Wheeling net at 19:18 of the third period to give the Chiefs the 5-3 win.
