Aberdeen IronBirds News Release
Aberdeen, MD - Aberdeen IronBirds' shortstop Mychal Givens hit a homerun to left field in the bottom of the first inning, but that would be the only offense the IronBirds could muster as they were swept by division rival Staten Island.
Givens' homerun to left field was one of his three hits of the evening, as he accounted for three of the five hits Aberdeen would get in the game.
Staten Island did not wait long to counter. In the top of the second, Yankee third baseman Zach Wilson led off with a single. After Benjamin Gamel was hit by a pitch, he had to leave the game. Shane Brown walked to load the bases on Aberdeen starter Matthew Drummond. Jhorge Liccien followed with an RBI single which scored Wilson and kept the bases loaded. Ali Castillo then had a sacrifice fly which scored Robert Rinard, who came in for Gamel. A few batters later, Cito Culver roped an RBI single pushing the Yankee lead to 4-1 after the top of the second. The Yankees sent 10 men to the plate in their big inning.
The Yankees would get on the board again in the third. Rinard reached on a Connor Narron error, and later scored on Liccien's RBI double, pushing the lead to 5-1.
Staten Island scored the final two runs of the ball game in the top of the fifth. Brown and Castillo singled and then came home on a Mason Williams two out triple, making the score 7-1 in favor of the visitors from Staten Island.
Drummond took the loss, falling to 0-2 on the season. He pitched 1.2 innings, allowing 4 hits, 4 runs (all earned), three walks and two strikeouts. Yankee starter Wilton Rodriguez went three innings, giving up three hits, one run (earned), and four walks. Vidal Nuno picked up the win in relief for Staten Island. He pitched four innings of shutout baseball, allowing just one hit, one walk, and four strikeouts. The IronBirds have now lost eight in a row, falling to 1-8. Staten Island maintains their lead on the McNamara Division, improving to 6-2.
The IronBirds welcome the Brooklyn Cyclones, Short Season Class A affiliate of the New York Mets, to Aberdeen for a three game set beginning tomorrow at 5:35 p.m. Aaron Wirsch (0-0, 0.00) will get the start for the IronBirds, while Marco Camarena (0-0, 4.50) will take the hill for the Cyclones.
