Aberdeen IronBirds News Release

Tonight's Match-up

Losers of seven straight games, the Aberdeen IronBirds will try to avoid their second consecutive sweep tonight against the Staten Island Yankees (Short Season-A affiliate of the New York Yankees). Up 5-3 in the ninth inning last night, the IronBirds surrendered three runs on just two hits, allowing the Yankees to take the lead and eventually win. Tonight, Aberdeen will ask Matt Drummond to try to stop the bleeding. A 20th round pick in last year's draft, Drummond struck out six in four innings in his only start this year at Brooklyn. He'll go up against right-hander Wilton Rodriguez.

2011 Draft Picks

Catcher Adam Davis was added to the IronBirds roster yesterday afternoon. An 11th round pick out of the University of Illinois, Davis is the first 2011 O's draftee to join the IronBirds this season. Davis had a strong season for the Illini in 2011, batting .295 with five homers and 33 RBI. He also stole 15 bases and was caught just four times.

Hit Parade

Despite the loss, the IronBirds set season-highs last night in a number of offensive categories. Aberdeen set new season-highs in hits (15) and home runs (3) in a game. It was also the first time an IronBirds hitter blasted two home runs in a game (Jeremy Nowak) and the first time this season IronBirds hitters hit back-to-back homers (Nowak and Wynston Sawyer).

The Losing Streak

After winning on opening night, the IronBirds have lost seven straight games. All of the losses have come against teams in the division, causing Aberdeen to falling 4.5 games out of first place. The IronBirds franchise record for most losses in a row came over the 2004-2005 seasons. Aberdeen lost the final four games of the 2004 season, and then the first six of the 2005 season totaling a 10-game losing streak.

Nail-Biters

The IronBirds have lost the seven games in a row by a total of 10 runs. Aberdeen has suffered five one-run losses, and two extra-inning losses. In three of the L's, the IronBirds have put the tying run in scoring position in their final at-bat, but couldn't knock him in.
