Kane County Cougars News Release
DAVENPORT, Iowa - Behind the pitching of Rob Gilliam and three different two-out run-scoring hits by their offense, the Kane County Cougars beat the Quad Cities River Bandits, 4-2, Friday night at Modern Woodmen Park to claim the 2nd-half opener. The Cougars had been off since last Sunday for the all-star break and are now 8-3 against playoff-bound Quad Cities this season.
Gilliam (5-5) improved to 4-0 with a 1.99 ERA in four outings against the River Bandits this season. He pitched 5 1/3 innings of four-hit ball with three walks and seven strikeouts in the win. He departed with the bases loaded in the sixth, and Connor Hoehn ended that jam and pitched the next two frames with scoreless relief. Jose Guzman yielded a pair of runs in the ninth before recording the final out.
The Cougars grabbed two runs in the second off Eric Fornataro (5-6) on a two-out double by Mike Gilmartin. Then Rashun Dixon singled home Anthony Aliotti with two outs in the sixth, and Max Stassi's poked his third hit of the night with a two-out RBI single in the eighth that plated Conner Crumbliss. The Cougars were 5-for-9 with runners in scoring position.
The Cougars (1-0, 33-37) and River Bandits (0-1, 40-30) continue the three-game set Saturday night at 6 CT. Dan Straily (5-4, 4.80) is scheduled to face Jorge Rondon (2-4, 3.40). The game will be broadcast online at www.kccougars.com with pregame coverage starting at 5:45 p.m.
