Dayton Dragons News Release

Lansing, Mich.-Chris Hopkins' two-run single with two outs in the bottom of the 11th inning brought the Lansing Lugnuts from behind as they defeated the Dayton Dragons 7-6 on Friday night in the opener to the second half for both clubs. The Lugnuts trailed 4-2 in the bottom of the ninth and 6-4 in the bottom of the 11th but rallied to come from behind in both innings and win the game.

The Dayton bullpen surrendered seven runs in five and two-thirds innings of work in the loss.

Dayton's Cameron Satterwhite delivered a tie-breaking double in the top of the 11th inning and scored on Frank Pfister's single to give the Dragons a 6-4 lead.

In the bottom of the 11th, the Dragons brought on Pedro Villarreal to close it out. He allowed an infield single and a one-out walk but got Kenny Wilson to fly out to left for the second out. Ryan Goins singled to right to bring in one run and make it 6-5. Kevin Ahrens hit a bouncer to third, but Pfister's throw to first pulled Chris Richburg off the bag for a throwing error to load the bases. Hopkins, in his only at-bat of the game, hit a soft liner into left field that brought in two runs to end the game.

Dayton got on the scoreboard to take the lead in the second inning. Satterwhite doubled off the right field fence with two outs and Mark Fleury followed with a home run to right to make it 2-0. It was Fleury's fifth homer of the year.

In the Dayton fifth, Pfister doubled down the left field line with one out, went to third on an infield single by Alex Oliveras, and scored on a two-out hit to left by Ryan LaMarre to give Dayton a 3-0 lead.

Lansing battled back in the seventh. Held to just one hit over the first six innings, they got back-to-back singles from Justin Jackson and Balbino Fuenmayor before Eric Eiland tripled with one out to bring in two runs and make it 3-2. But Dragons reliever Blair Carson was able to recover, getting Wilson to fly to shallow right with Eiland holding at third, and then getting Goins to fly out to left to preserve the lead.

Dayton's Richburg blasted his team-leading ninth home run of the season in the top of the eighth inning to give the Dragons a 4-2 lead.

Dragons reliever Jason Braun tossed a perfect bottom of the eighth and struck out the first two batters in the bottom of the ninth before issuing a walk and then hitting the next batter to put the tying runs on base. Wilson singled to center field to bring in one run and make it 4-3. Junior Martinez replaced Braun and surrendered a game-tying single to Goins to make it a 4-4 game, giving Lansing their first comeback of the night.

Dragons starting pitcher Tim Crabbe fired five scoreless innings. He allowed just one hit, a single in the second inning. He walked six and struck out six to extend his string of consecutive scoreless innings to 17. Crabbe was in line for the win until Lansing scored in the bottom of the ninth.

The Dragons play at Lansing again Saturday at 7:05 p.m. J.C. Sulbaran (3-3, 4.99) will start for Dayton against Lansing's Ryan Tepera (6-2, 3.33). The two clubs will close out the series Sunday afternoon before the Dragons open a six-game homestand Monday night against the Fort Wayne TinCaps at Fifth Third Field.
