
Chiefs Start Second Half With 4-2 Victory Friday

Peoria, IL - The Peoria Chiefs got on top early and never gave up the lead in a 4-2 victory over the Cedar Rapids Kernels on Friday night. The win was the first for the Chiefs in the second half of the season and improves their record to 39-31 on the season. The Chiefs got on the board in the second off starter Tyler Kehrer. With two outs Matt Cerda singled and advanced to third on a Jae-Hoon Ha double. Charles Thomas walked to load the bases and a Jonathon Mota infield single brought home the first run of the game. Hak-Ju Lee singled to left to score two more and give the Chiefs a 3-0 lead. The Kernels struck back in the third off starter Ryan Searle. Mike Trout reached on a fielders' choice and stole second base. Matt Long singled to right field and Trout beat the throw at home to score the run and make it 3-1. The Chiefs got the run back on one swing in the bottom of the inning. With one out Justin Bour crushed a pitch to left centerfield for his team-leading seventh home run of the season and a 4-1 Chiefs lead. Cedar Rapids cut in to the lead in the sixth off reliever Nick Struck. Jose Jimenez singled and advanced to second after Jeremy Cruz was hit by a pitch. Nolan Brannon entered as a pinch runner for Cruz and Michael Wing singled to score Jimenez and make it 4-2. The Chiefs bullpen did not aallow a run the rest of the way as Peoria held on for the win. Searle (4-1) pitched five innings and gave up one run on six hits while striking out four. Struck threw two innings and gave up one run on four hits and struck out one. Yohan Gonzalez pitched one shutout inning, allowing one hit while walking one and striking out one. Frank Bautista pitched the final inning and did not allow a run, surrendering one hit and striking out one batter for his first save of the season.
