
TinCaps lose bullpen battle, 5-3

FORT WAYNE, Ind. - The Bowling Green Hot Rods came back to beat the Fort Wayne TinCaps, 5- 3, Friday at Parkview Field. LHP Mike Watt allowed just one run but the bullpen gave up four runs in four innings to take the loss.
Of the eight runs which scored in the game, six of the runners reached either via walk or error. Fort Wayne relievers allowed four runs in four innings while the Hot Rods bullpen fired four hitless frames.
In the top of the first, Tyler Bortnick drew a one-out walk. He went to second on a groundout, stole third and scored on an infield single to make it 1-0, Hot Rods.
In the bottom of the third, the TinCaps tied it with a two-out rally. Jason Hagerty drew a walk and scored when Nate Freiman laced a double into the left-field corner to deadlock the score at 1- 1.
Fort Wayne took its first lead of the game in the fifth, again scoring with two outs. Hagerty doubled, Freiman walked, then Edinson Rincon slammed a double to right-center to chase both runners home and give Fort Wayne a 3-1 advantage.
Bowling Green chipped away with an unearned run in the top of the sixth. Bortnick reached on a one-out error, stole second and third, then scored on a groundout by Brett Nommensen. The Hot Rods tied it an inning later when Ryan Wiegand drew a leadoff walk and later scored on Julio Cedeno's RBI single, making it a 3-3 game.
The Hot Rods plated the go-ahead run in the top of the ninth. Nommensen drew a leadoff walk, was balked to second by RHP Nick Schumacher, and Mark Thomas blooped a double down the left-field line to give the visitors a 4-3 lead. After a groundout, a wild pitch brought Thomas home with an insurance run.
Schumacher (2-3) took the loss. Bowling Green RHP Alex Koronis (6-2) was the winner and RHP Scott Shuman notched his tenth save.
Fort Wayne fell to 36-35. Bowling Green upped its record to 32-38.
The TinCaps and Hot Rods (Class-A Tampa Bay Rays) continue the three-game series Saturday at 7:05 p.m. Fort Wayne LHP Jose De Paula (3-1) goes to the mound opposite LHP Kyle Lobstein (4-3).
