Bats Go Still Against Stillings
June 25, 2010 - Midwest League (MWL1)
Clinton LumberKings News Release
Clinton, IA - Back from a four-day break for the Midwest League All-Star Game, the Clinton LumberKings never got their bats going against right-hander Brad Stillings of the Beloit Snappers in a 6-1 loss at Alliant Energy Field.
Stillings (W, 7-3) scattered three hits over 7.0 scoreless innings, striking out four. He escaped two-on, two-out jams in the second and fourth innings, Clinton's only real threats to him all night.
Left-hander Jimmy Gillheeney cruised through the first three innings, but gave up a run in the fourth as Josmil Pinto doubled home James Beresford on hit-and-run with two outs.
An inning later, Gillheeney (L, 4-6) would yield a hit and two walks to load the bases. Wang Wei Lin singled home a run with a liner to left and Aaron Hicks powered a two-run double to the left-center gap, chasing Gillheeney from the game. Lefty Jose Jimenez came on and allowed one of two inherited runners to score as Beloit exited the inning with a 5-0 lead.
The Snappers scored once more on right-hander Daniel Cooper in the eighth to make it a 6-0 lead, but had trouble closing the Kings out in the ninth. Right-hander Peter Kennelly loaded the bases on a single, a walk and a fielder's choice, then issued a bases-loaded walk to Matt Cerione to end the shutout. With the bases loaded and Nick Franklin suddenly the tying run in the on-deck circle, Gabriel Noriega belted a deep fly ball to the track in left. Unfortunately, it stayed playable as Steven Liddle gripped it for the final out.
Cerione finished 1-for-3 with Clinton's only RBI, ensuring the LumberKings would not be shut out. The last time they failed to score in a game was on May 4 at Alliant Energy Field, when the same Beloit club blanked them, 2-0.
Derek McCallum (2-for-4) and Anderson Hidalgo (2-for-2) each finished with multi-hit games for the Snappers, who improve to 8-2 against the LumberKings this season.
The LumberKings (0-1, 37-33) and Snappers (1-0, 38-32) continue the series tomorrow night at Alliant Energy Field, first pitch scheduled for 6:00 PM. Left-hander Nick Czyz (0-0, 0.00) makes his fourth appearance, first start for Clinton. Listen to the game on AM 1390 KCLN in Clinton or live on the web at 1390kcln.com.
