Omaha Storm Chasers News Release
OMAHA - Royals starter Chris George was rocked for nine runs in six innings Sunday at Rosenblatt Stadium, as the Nashville Sounds stomped Omaha 12-3 in front of 2,130 fans at sweltering Rosenblatt Stadium.
The Sounds jumped to a 4-0 lead in the top of the first inning on Prince Fielder's grand slam that bounced off the top row of the right field bleachers and out of the ballpark. George (6-7) surrendered two more home runs - Chris Barnwell's homer leading off the second and Mike Rivera's solo shot with two outs in the third that put Nashville ahead 7-2.
George has given up 24 home runs in his 22 games this season, which is now tied for the Pacific Coast League lead with Tucson's Chris Michalak. Since striking out a career high eleven batters in a 2-1 loss to the Iowa Cubs on July 2nd, George is 0-2 with a 10.80 ERA over his last four starts. He has yielded 30 hits, including six home runs, in 16-and-two-thirds innings over that span. He fell to 0-6 at Rosenblatt this year.
Rivera knocked in three runs for Nashville. The veteran catcher smacked his second home run of the game in the eighth inning off Jaime Cerda and delivered a run-scoring single in the ninth to chase Nate Field, who was activated from the disabled list just prior to the game's first pitch. Omaha pitchers issued eight walks in the contest (one shy of a season high) and four of those Sounds runners came around to score.
Barnwell wound up with three hits, two RBI and two runs scored for Nashville (57-45), which is now 12 games ahead of Omaha (45-57) in the American Conference North with 42 games left to play for each club. Veteran right-hander Rick Helling (9-3) earned his first win in three decisions against the Royals, giving up just one earned run in six stanzas.
The series and home stand finale is Monday at 12:05 p.m.: RH Ben Hendrickson (4-7, 4.46) vs. RH Shawn Camp (3-6, 3.86). Air-time is 11:45 a.m. on Magic 1490 and at www.Oroyals.com.
