Sidewinders pound River Cats, 11-6

Tucson exploded for 11 runs Sunday afternoon and defeated Sacramento 11-6 at Raley Field. The Sidewinders improved to 7-4 on the 12-game trip and are 7-4 this season against the River Cats. Tucson also moved six games back of the River Cats in the South Division.

Both teams plated a run in the first inning. Tucson's tally came on a Conor Jackson double, scoring Andy Green who had walked.

Bobby Smith connected for his ninth home run of the year off Edgar Gonzalez in the third inning putting Sacramento in front 2-1.

Tucson responded with a five-run fourth inning to chase River Cat starter Dan Meyer. The 7-8-9 batters, Corey Myers, Juan Brito and Keoni DeRenne each drove in one run. Brian Barden capped the inning with a two-run double off the fence in left field. Barden was out at third to end the inning.

The Sidewinders plated two more runs in the fifth inning. Jackson started the frame with a solo home run to left field. Myers added an RBI on a fielders choice.

Green led off the sixth inning with a double. He would score his third run of the day two batters later on a Jackson sacrifice fly, his third RBI of the game. The run provided Tucson with a 9-2 advantage.

The River Cats chased Gonzalez and jumped back in the game with a four-run sixth inning. Brant Colamarino started the inning with a home run. Kerry Ligtenberg replaced Gonzalez with a pair of runners on base and promptly allowed a three-run homer to John Baker cutting the Sidewinders lead to 9-6.

Tucson put the game out of reach with two more runs in the ninth. Carlos Quentin and Josh Kroeger both produced run scoring doubles for the final 11-6 margin.

Gonzalez earned his eighth win of the year despite allowing five runs in 5.1 innings of work. Randy Choate pitched 1.1 scoreless innings to collect his third save.

Tucson improved to 52-50. Tucson and Sacramento will finish off the four-game series and the Sidewinders will end the 12-game road trip Monday night with a 7:05 p.m. game at Raley Field. Jon Cannon (3-5 4.31) will start for the Sidewinders against Ryan Glynn (1-1 1.46). The game will air live at 7:05 p.m. on Cool 1450 AM.
