Greensboro Generals News Release

GREENSBORO—The last time that the Greensboro Generals faced off against the Augusta Lynx took place on February 27th, and similar to tonight's game, Greensboro won, however this time by the final of 5-2.

In a scoreless opening frame, Greensboro managed 11 shots on goal, opposed to eight for the Lynx. By not scoring a goal in the first period, it marks the second time in as many home games that neither team recorded a point, and third time for the Generals. The most recent home game that Greensboro netted a goal, would date back to December 27th, when the Greensboro scored twice in a 4-3 win over the Roanoke Express.

Mark Turner kicked off scoring in the second, when on a feed that came around the left corner of the rink, Turner caught a feed from Pete Gardiner to give the Generals a 1-0 lead, just 41 seconds into the period. After a seven minute lapse, the Generals would net their second goal, when Matt Elich scored from just beyond the circles, as he sent a slap shot on an assist from Mark Turner and Geno Parrish, who rank first and second in assists for the Generals. Greensboro would then rely on speed and youth in taking a 3-0 lead, as Matt Elich and Eric Fortier fed Tom Reimann as he battled in front of the net for his 10th goal of the season, sending the puck past Lynx netminder Will Hamele. With the clock fading into the second intermission, Mike Bayrack scored the only power-play goal of the game, with two seconds remaining, on an assist from Parrish and Turner, pushing the lead to 4-0 in Greensboro's favor.

In the third, Greensboro started off in the penalty box, which spelled trouble for the defense. With Matt Elich serving time for a high sticking penalty, Augusta's Jonathon Gagnon put a rebound shot on net to break the scoring drought at the 2:16 mark. Just over a minute and a half later, the Lynx's Scott Kelman would net their second power-play opportunity, sending the puck past Generals netminder Daniel Berthiaume to cut the lead in half at 4-2. It was then time for Generals captain Mark Turner to again rise to the occasion, as he sent home his second goal of the game, on a feed from the right circle by Mike Bayrack, to shift momentum back in the Generals direction.

Netminder Daniel Berthiaume paced the Generals with 28 saves, including a kick save in the third period that helped to maintain the 5-2 advantage for Greensboro.

"Especially when you are struggling, you are looking for your leaders to come out and produce. I think that happened tonight with Turner, Bayrack, and Gardiner had a great game. Our veteran defense also played a great game, with Berthiaume making some great saves, for us in the third," Matt Turek said of his team's performance against the Lynx.

When the Greensboro Generals take on the Atlantic City Boardwalk Bullies this Saturday at 7:30 p.m., last season's biggest nemesis, fans and local businesses will have an extra incentive to come out and cheer on the Generals as they host the "Pack the House" night.
