Dayton Gems News Release
Week in Review: (Friday, 11-5-10)
The Gems had their season-high three game winning streak end on Friday, with a nail biter against the first place Colorado Eagles. The final score of the game was 1-0 and both goaltenders were the main reason why. Gems starter Jeff Jakaitis stopped 31 of 32 shots including a spectacular save on a penalty shot attempt in the first period. The Eagles Kyle Jones was just a little bit better stopping all 30 Gems shots to squeak out the victory and pick up his first shutout of the season. The game was laden with penalties, 14 to be exact between the two teams combined. The Gems were ranked second in the league prior to the start of Friday's game but they couldn't get it going that night and finished 0-7. The lone goal that was scored by the Eagles came on a two-man advantage in the second period. The Gems had their own two-man situation near the end of the second but could not beat Jones.
Week in Review: (Saturday, 11-6-10)
Unlike Friday's defensive masterpiece by both teams, Saturday was the exact opposite and featured goals galore right from the opening faceoff. The Eagles jumped out to a 1-0 lead just: 41 seconds into the contest. After former Eagle and current Gem Brett Lutes tied the game, Colorado answered: 50 seconds later to regain the lead. The second period was all about Dayton as the Gems reeled off three goals in six minutes to take a 4-2, two of which were unassisted and scored by Assistant Captain Chris Lipsett. The Eagles cut the lead to one by grabbing a late goal just before the second came to an end. The third period was back and forth until the Eagles found a way to tie up the game when the Gems took a tripping penalty with 1:19 left in regulation. Each team only registered three shots a piece in the overtime and the Gems were outscored 2-1 in the shootout to give Colorado the victory. Brett Lutes was the only Gem to score in the shootout.
Dayton Gems Weekly Notes
WELL THAT WAS A FIRST: This past weekend's games against the Colorado Eagles marked a number of firsts for the Gems this season. Friday's 1-0 result marked the first and only time the Gems have been shutout so far this season and it was the first time that the Gems faced a penalty shot against at a home game. Saturday's 5-4 shootout loss marked the first time the Gems have gone to overtime and the shootout this season.
LIPPER LIGHTS THE LAMP: Assistant Captain Chris Lipsett scored two of the Gems four goals in the Gems 5-4 shootout loss on Saturday. With those two goals, Lipsett now leads the team in scoring with nine points (3G, 6A) and is tied for second on the team in goals scored with three (Brett Lutes, Paul Ferraro). He has recorded at least one point in all but two games and had a team-high four game points streak that dated from 10-16-10 to 10-23-10. Lipsett also leads the team in power play points with six (1PPG, 5PPA).
BUSY BODY IN GOAL: Goaltender Jeff Jakaitis has started every game for the Gems so far this season and is ranked second in the league in minutes played with 422:51; only Juliano Pagliero of Rio Grande Valley has played more (494:33). Jakaitis is also second in the league in number of saves with 247. His .929 save percentage ranks him sixth and his four wins have him tied for fourth. Over his last five starts, Jakaitis has averaged 38 saves per start.
BALANCED ATTACK: The Gems have recorded a total of 59 points as a team so far this season on 24 goals and 35 assists. Nine players have recorded four or more points (Couturier, Stewart, Ferraro, Boudreau, Labenski, Ornelas, Lutes, Boisvert, Lipsett), six of those nine have recorded five points or more and two (Boisvert, Lipsett) of those five have recorded seven points or more.
