Arizona Sundogs News Release
The Arizona Sundogs (2-6-0) dropped the first two games of a season-long eight-game road trip last weekend, extending their current winless streak to five games.
On Friday, the Sundogs were doubled-up by the Wichita Thunder by a 4-2 score. Doug Groenestege owned a 12-0-0 career mark vs. Wichita coming into the contest before the setback. First-year forward Jason Williams netted his team and rookie leading fifth goal and eighth point of the year while Tyler Butler extended his point streak to five games with his third goal of the season.
On Saturday Arizona was shut out for the first time this season, 4-0, by the Texas Brahmas and netminder Kevin Beech. Texas swept the season series, winning all three contests between the two clubs. The two teams combined for 178 total penalty minutes in the contest.
Arizona looks to snap its five-game slide as it continues its season-long eight-game road trip this Thursday at 6:35pm (Arizona time) against the Evansville IceMen.
Sundogs Storylines:
- First-year forward Jason Williams leads the Sundogs and all CHL rookies in goals (5) and points (8). His four power-play goals are tops in the league. His .294 shooting percentage is best among first-year players and fifth-best in the CHL. His six minor penalties are also tops among rookies.
- Defenseman Tyler Butler ranks sixth in the CHL in scoring among defenseman with six points (3g/3a) in eight games. His two power-play goals ranks second among league d-men. The Kanata, Ontario, native had a team-high five-game point streak snapped in Saturday's 4-0 loss to Texas.
- Arizona and Texas combined for 178 total penalty minutes in Saturday's contest, including 80 penalty minutes at the 18:18 mark of the second period.
- The Sundogs lead the league in minors with 72.
- Adam Smyth leads all players in penalty minutes with 95 and major penalties with seven.
- Arizona is winless in four Saturday night contests this season. Conversely, the team is 2-2-0 in Friday night games.
- Billy Bezeau ranks third among league defensemen with 28 shots.
