Wichita Thunder News Release
ALLEN, TX- The Wichita Thunder lost 4-1 to the Allen Americans at the Allen Event Center on Friday night.
Allen utilized three goals in the first to build a lead that the Thunder could not overcome. Colton Yellow opened the scoring with a power play goal at 11:05 in the first period. Bruce Graham passed to Yellow Horn who was a few steps in front of the blue line and connected past Marc-Antoine Gelinas for the early lead. An open Graham collected a loose puck just to the left of Gelinas at 13:22 and scored on a high backhander.
Later in the first, Steven Kaunisto pulled the Thunder within one, driving in a rebound on a power play at 16:57. Matt Robinson's initial shot was denied by Americans' goaltender Chris Whitley before Kaunisto finished the play from the low slot. Allen re-extended its lead 1:22 later when Judd Blackwater scored on a wrist shot from the left hash mark following an outlet pass from Graham.
In the final minutes of the second period, Andrew Martens took Wichita's first penalty shot of the season. Martens was stopped by Whitley who smothered the puck with his right pad as it approached the goal line.
David Strathman sealed the game with an empty net goal at 18:49 in the third.
Gelinas was strong again for the Thunder, saving 32 of 35 in his first Thunder loss. Whitley earned the win saving 27 of 28. Each team was 1 for 6 on the power play.
