Arizona Sundogs News Release
PRESCOTT VALLEY, Ariz. - Winning back-to-back games for first time this season and earning points in four straight contests, the Arizona Sundogs topped the Fort Wayne Komets, 3-2, Friday night in the third and final meeting of the season between the two clubs.
The trio of Luke Erickson, Cam Keith and Kyle Hood combined for eight points on the night. Erickson tallied two goals and his second game-winner in as many contests while Hood assisted on all three Sundogs tallies. Keith added a goal and two assists in the win.
Levente Szuper, making his second consecutive start in net for Arizona, turned aside 36 of 38 shots, including a second-period penalty shot, to earn his club's fourth win of the year.
Erickson opened scoring in the contest to give Arizona an early 1-0 lead, one-timing a Keith centering feed from the far corner 3:42 into the opening frame. Cycling in the far corner, Erickson left the puck for Keith before breaking loose snapping a shot past Komets goaltender Kevin Reiter.
P.C. Drouin looked to even the score at one 5:43 into the second period as the forward was awarded a penalty shot after being hindered by defenseman Tyler Butler on a breakaway, but the forward failed to convert.
Keith picked up his second goal in as many games with 8:48 remaining in middle frame to give the Sundogs a two-goal cushion, knocking the puck past Reiter from the slot as the puck trickled between the circles. Corey Laurysen, claimed off waivers from the Rapid City Rush earlier in the day, assisted on the play for his first point of the season.
Skating 4-on-4, Brandon Warner cut Arizona's lead to one with his first goal of the year with 2:54 to play in the second period. Trailing the play, Warner collected a Frankie DeAngelis pass at the top of the far circle and skated through the slot before sending a backhand past Szuper.
The Sundogs reclaimed a two-goal lead at 7:48 of the third period as Hood registered his sixth assist in his last five games, setting up Erickson as the forward skated between the circles for his third goal in two games since joining Arizona.
Kaleigh Schrock pulled Fort Wayne back to within one less than a minute later, sending a shot off Szuper from below the goal line as the netminder recovered from an earlier save.
Arizona has now held its opponents scoreless in the first period in the last four games after giving up 11 through the season's first nine contests.
Prior to the game the Sundogs waived forward Marcus Pryde. The Oakville, Ontario, native appeared in four games, registering four shots and a minus-2 rating.
With the win, Arizona (4-7-2) moves into a tie for fifth place in the Berry Conference with the Mississippi RiverKings and sits just two points back of fourth-place Texas. The Sundogs close out a season-long eight-game road trip Sunday at 2:05pm (Arizona time) against the Bloomington PrairieThunder.
