Chesapeake Baysox News Release
(Bowie, MD) - The Baysox allowed six runs for the first time in their last 12 games and could not come back, dropping Saturday night's contest 6-2 in Binghamton. Brad Bergesen lost his second straight start, allowing three runs on five hits through 4.0 innings of work. Mets starter Dillon Gee is now 2-0 in AA with both wins coming over the Baysox. He worked 7.0 one-run innings, allowing seven hits in the victory.
The Baysox broke through first with a run in the top of the second inning. Jeff Nettles led off with a base hit and Mike Rodriguez hit a single to put runners on first and second. Brian Peterson grounded into a double play, advancing Nettles to third base with two outs. Travis Brown picked up a base hit up the middle to score Nettles and give Bowie a 1-0 lead.
The Mets fought back to take the lead with three runs in the bottom of the second. Ambiorix Concepcion led off with a walk and promptly stole second base. Shawn Bowman hit a single to left field, putting runners on first and third with no outs. Jose Coronado drew a one-out walk to load the bases and Fernando Martinez slapped a single to left-center field, scoring Concepcion and Bowman to give Binghamton the lead. Mike Carp hit a two-out single to drive Coronado in to score and made the Mets lead 3-1 before Bergesen got out of the inning.
Wilfredo Perez came on to take over for Bergesen in the bottom of the fifth inning. He threw a shutout fifth before allowing a run in the bottom of the sixth on a ground-rule double by Jose Coronado.
Perez walked Peeter Ramos to lead off the bottom of the seventh and Chad Thall came on to take over for Bowie. Mike Carp reached on an error by Ryan Finan that allowed Ramos to score to make the Mets lead 5-1. Caleb Stewart blasted a double to bring Carp home and the score was 6-1 Binghamton.
Nolan Reimold led off the top of the ninth with a homerun to cut the score to 6-2, but the Baysox could not put anything together, snapping their four-game winning streak. They move to 79-55 with the loss but remain 4.0 games ahead of the Akron Aeros for first place in the Southern Division. The Baysox look to clinch home field advantage in the first round of the playoffs with eight games remaining. RHP David Hernandez (8-4, 2.58 ERA) will go up against Mets RHP Jose Sanchez (13-6, 3.77 ERA) Sunday night in Binghamton.
The Bowie Baysox are out to Beat The Streaks in their 16th season as the "AA" affiliate of the Baltimore Orioles. The Baysox have not reached the postseason since 1997 and have never reached the Eastern League Championship. Playoff tickets are available now; tickets for all remaining regular season games are available on www.baysox.com or by calling the box office at (301) 464-4865.
