Defenders Fall 4-1/4th Straight

Connecticut Defenders News Release
NORWICH, CT- The Defenders' offense sputtered for the fourth night in a row as they came up short against the Erie SeaWolves on Saturday, 4-1.
Surprisingly, Connecticut got on the board first. In the last of the first, Eliezer Alfonzo ripped a single to the opposite field to plate Kyle Haines who singled earlier in the inning as the Defs took an early 1-0 lead.
Adam Cowart took the ball in the top of the second with a lead but quickly allowed the SeaWolves the equalizing run when Santo De Leon slapped a base hit to score Ryan Roberson. Through one and a half, the game was tied at 1-1.
Erie continued their pressure in the following inning as Casper Wells annihilated a two-run homer over the left-center field wall to give the Wolves a 3-1 advantage.
A scoreless fourth led to another run for the SeaWolves in the fifth as Wilkin Ramirez smacked a double to bring Will Rhymes home and stretch the lead to 4-1.
Both bullpens took over from the sixth on as Connecticut and Erie traded zeroes through the rest of the contest. The Defenders best chance to tie things up came in the eighth inning with two outs and two on for Alfonzo. On a 2-2 fastball, Alfonzo spanked a high deep shot to left field but came about three feet shy of the wall as the crowd of 4,543 collectively held their breath. Unfortunately for Connecticut, the fly ball came up short, as did their chances to win the ballgame.
Luis Marte picked up the win for Erie, Adam Cowart suffered his seventh loss to drop him to 8-7 and Rudy Darrow nailed down his fifth save.
The Defenders will play for the last time at Dodd Stadium on Sunday afternoon as it will be Fan Appreciation Day at the ballpark. Tickets are still available for the contest at ctdefenders.com or by calling the box office at (860) 887-7962.
