Atlanta Gladiators News Release

The ECHL announced today that Gladiators Goaltender Michael Garnett has been named the ITECH ECHL Saver of the Week for the week of December 2nd to the 7th.

Garnett started three of the Gladiators four games this week and ended up seeing action in all four games. He allowed just one goal in each game while going 3-1-0 for the Gladiators to help Gwinnett recapture the best record in the ECHL.

"Garney has been solid and reliable in net for us all season long," said Gladiators Head Coach Jeff Pyle. "He has a lot of poise in net and his hard work has paid off. There is no more of a deserving guy at this level to receive this honor. He has what it takes to play at the next level."

Garnett made 23 saves in a 5-1 win over Charlotte on Tuesday and returned with a 29 save effort on Friday in a 3-1 win against Columbus. Garnett made nine 3rd period saves in a relief outing in Saturday's 2-1 loss against South Carolina. He followed up with a tie for a season high 31 saves in Sunday's 3-1 win against Columbia on Sunday.

Under contract to the Atlanta Thrashers, the Saskatoon, Saskatchewan native was selected in the third round (80th overall) by Atlanta in the 2001 NHL Entry Draft and backed up Milan Hnilicka in the Thrashers 2001-02 season finale on April 14, 2002.

Garnett lowered his goals against averages from a season high 2.53 to a 2.25 and raised his save percentage from .904 to a .916 over the past week while he is third in the ECHL in win with 11 (11-3-2).
