Colorado Eagles News Release
WICHITA, KS. - Eagles forward Luke Salazar collected a pair of goals to go along with one assist, as Colorado recorded its eighth consecutive win with a 5-2 victory over the Wichita Thunder on Friday. The Eagles would finish the night going 2-for-5 on the power play, while four different Eagles skaters posted multi-point nights in the winning effort.
Salazar would bag the first goal of the game when he carried the puck into the slot and snapped a wrist shot past Thunder goaltender Scott Greenham, giving Colorado a 1-0 lead just 3:06 into the contest.
The Thunder would strike back in quick fashion, as forward Zach O'Brien fielded a rebound in the low slot and tucked it into the back of the net to square the game at 1-1 at the 6:48 mark of the first period.
With time winding down in the opening stanza, Eagles defenseman Sean Zimmerman would launch a shot from the right circle that would deflect off the skate of Salazar and past Greenham to put Colorado back on top 2-1 with only 34 seconds remaining in the first period.
The Eagles would extend their lead to 3-1 off a Wichita turnover in the Colorado zone that would create a 2-on-1 rush down the ice, culminating with forward Alex Belzile lighting the lamp with a wrister from the left circle at the 14:48 mark of the second period.
In the waning seconds of the middle frame and with the Thunder on a power play, a scrambling effort in the low slot would see a loose puck land in the crease and be flicked home by Wichita defenseman Jamie Doornbosch with only seven seconds remaining in the period. The goal cut Colorado's lead to 3-2 and gave the Thunder their third power-play goal in the last two contests.
Eagles defenseman Matt Register would capitalize on a third-period power play with a shot from the point that beat Greenham upstairs and grew the Eagles lead to 4-2 just 3:27 into the final frame. That advantage would stretch to 5-2 when Colorado found itself on another power play and saw defenseman Jake Marto wire a one-timer into the net from the slot at the 16:38 mark of the third period.
Colorado outshot the Thunder 20-5 in the third period and 39-21 in the contest. Eagles goaltender Clarke Saunders collected his 20th win of the season, making 19 saves in the contest.
The Eagles conclude their three-game set against the Wichita Thunder on Saturday, February 11th at 6:00pm MT at Intrust Bank Arena in Wichita, KS.
