Idaho Steelheads News Release

Steel Reel

The Steelheads got back in the win column on Wednesday night, skating to a 4-1 win in their first ever meeting with the Wheeling Nailers. The Steelheads will look to string two more points together when they take on the Nailers again at CenturyLink Arena on Friday while donning their specialty jerseys for the Jayden DeLuca Foundation Jersey Auction.

Idaho didn't wait long on Wednesday night to get on the board, with Joe Basaraba scoring the game's first goal just 47 seconds into the opening period. Tyler Currier would tie the score for Wheeling later in the period, but it wasn't long after that Brian Nugent netted a shorthanded goal for a 2-1 Steelheads lead. Will Merchant and Anthony Luciani added goals in the second period, while Landon Bow made 25 saves to earn his ninth win of the season.

No Frown a Man Down...

The Steelheads penalty kill continues to make a difference on the scoreboard, with Brian Nugent's shorthanded tally on Wednesday night serving as the Steelheads' fourth in the previous five games, fifth in the past nine, and eighth this season. The Steelheads' eight shorthanded goals are tied for sixth in the league, with six players factoring in and with Kyle Jean leading the team with three.

Strong Starts...

The Steelheads got on the board right away on Wednesday night with Joe Basaraba's tally and took a 2-1 lead after 20 minutes that they would never surrender. The Nailers have a minus-11 goal-differential in the first period this season but are plus-20 in the second period and plus-15 in the third. The Steelheads had the better of play for much of the first two periods on Wednesday, outshooting the Nailers 31-14 through 40 minutes.

Fresh Faces...

While the Nailers will again be without leading goal-scorer Jordan Kwas due to a suspension, the Steelheads will likely gain some reinforcements in the lineup for Friday night with defenseman Aaron Harstad and forward Bryce Van Brabant available to make their Steelheads debuts. Harstad, an ECHL All-Star this season, was acquired by the Steelheads from Norfolk on Wednesday and comes into the lineup with two goals and 12 points this season. Van Brabant has played 21 games this season with the Texas Stars, grabbing a goal and an assist. Both the Steelheads and Nailers played with just nine forwards for the series opener on Wednesday.
