Vay's Shutout Stifles Wings in Quad City

MOLINE, IL- Even though they heavily outshot their opponent, the Kalamazoo Wings couldn't beat the impenetrable netminding of Quad City Mallards' goaltender Adam Vay, during a 4-0 loss at iWireless Center on Friday night.

After a feeling-out process in the first period, Quad City struck after earning their first power play of the game. After cycling the puck along the left wing, Chris Francis was freed up with a pass from Michael Parks and Francis fired a wrist shot from an acute angle that flew over the shoulder of Kalamazoo netminder, Joel Martin.

Though Kalamazoo took control in the first minutes of the second period, it was the Mallards who padded their lead. Operating on their second power play of the game, Quad City set up along the right-wing wall and Justin Kovacs zipped a shot into the short-side corner of the goal for his 10th of the season.

Just over two minutes later, the hometown Mallards continued their efficient attack in the second period. Once again from a tight angle, Josh MacDonald found the open corner off the goal and increased the Mallards' lead to 3-0. After the goal, Martin was pulled in favor of Nick Riopel. Martin made 13 saves on 16 shots faced in 34:38 of play.

Quad City's three-goal advantage was plenty of cushion down the stretch, as netminder Adam Vay withstood the 14-shot barrage steered his way by Kalamazoo in the third period. Jack Nevins put the game on ice after finishing an empty-net tally with 22 seconds left in regulation.

Notes: Justin Taylor (eight games), and Tanner Sorenson (six games) each had their point streaks snapped... Blake Kessel was assessed a game misconduct at the 3:34 mark of the third period... Kessel's 22 penalty minutes were a season high for any Kalamazoo skater this season...Kalamazoo went 0/5 on the power play and 3/5 on the penalty kill... The Wings are 1-2-0-1 against Quad City this season... Kalamazoo outshot Quad City, 31-21.
