From the Notes
ABOUT LAST NIGHT: The Indians couldn't overcome an early deficit and suffered a 4-3 setback last night to the Stripers, their sixth loss in eight head-to-head matchups with Gwinnett this season. The Tribe loss sealed the season series victory for Gwinnett over Indy for just the second time in 10 years (also: 2009, 6-2). Tyler Eppler (7.0ip, 10h, 4r/er, 0bb, 3k) was outdueled by Stripers southpaw Kolby Allard (7.0ip, 7h, 1r/er, 2bb, 2k). The Stripers led 2-0 after one inning and after Adam Frazier cut the deficit in half with a run-scoring single in the third, Dustin Peterson belted a two-run homer to dead center in the home half to make it 4-1. The Tribe rallied for two runs in the eighth against lefty Rex Brothers, but Andres Santiago cleaned up the mess and allowed just one of three inherited runners to score. The Indians nearly completed the comeback in their final at-bat, but Ryan Lavarnway struck out with two runners in scoring position to end the game. Indy went 2-for-11 with RISP and left 10 men on base.
MIDDLE-OF-THE-ORDER PRODUCTION: The Indians received strong production from their Nos. 2-5 batters last night. Adam Frazier (2-for-3), Jose Osuna (2-for-5), Ryan Lavarnway (1-for-4) and Kevin Kramer (3-for-4) combined to bat 8-for-16 (.500) with two doubles, two RBI and two runs scored. Jason Martin, Indy's No. 7 batter last night, was the only other played in the lineup to muster up a hit against Gwinnett's staff.
ONE-RUN GAMES: Last night was just the 21st game for Indy decided by one run this season; the Indians are 10-11 in those contests. The 21 one-run games are tied with Durham (10-11) and Louisville (9-12) for the second-lowest amount in the IL behind Columbus (12-8). Gwinnett has played in 33 one-run games, going 13-20 overall; that total of 33 is tied for second most with Charlotte (17-16) and behind only Rochester (14-20) in the IL.
J-MART IN BUSINESS: Jason Martin is batting .302 (16-for-53) with nine RBI through 14 Triple-A contests. He already has four multi-hit games with Indy and has hit safely in 11 of the 14 games he's played in thus far.
WHAT'S GOIN' ON: The Indians have gone a season-high 10 straight games by having nine hits or less offensively, but they've still managed to go 6-4 during that stretch. The somewhat cold stretch offensively (.247, 78-for-316) has featured just 26 extra-base hits (2.6 per game), well below their season average of 3.3 extra-base hits per contest (306 in 92 games). When posting single-digit hit totals, the Tribe are 24-33 this season; they're 26-9 when recording 10 or more hits.
THREE HITS FOR KRAMER: Kevin Kramer logged his fifth three-hit game of the season last night and first since June 8 at Pawtucket. He leads the team with 28 multi-hit games. Kramer has hit safely in seven of his last nine road contests, batting .419 (13-for-31) with three doubles, one triple and four RBI in those games combined.
OSUNA'S WORLD: Jose Osuna is batting .337 (62-for-184) with four homers, 22 doubles, 35 RBI and a .910 OPS in 49 games for the Tribe. Since June 3 with Indy (23 games), Osuna has batted .356 (32-for-90) with nine doubles, 16 RBI and 11 runs scored. He has hit safely in 41 of his 49 starts for the Tribe this year.
BETTER WITH A SUITCASE: Kevin Kramer and Jose Osuna have fared much better on the road this season for the Tribe than at Victory Field. Kramer is batting .325 (50-for-154) with 19 extra-base hits on the road, including seven of his 11 home runs. He is slugging .552 on the road compared to .404 at home. Osuna is hitting a respectable .311 at The Vic, but he's hiked his average up to .370 (30-for-81) in 20 road contests. All four of Osuna's home runs have come on the road this season. As a team, the Indians are hitting .280 on the road and .268 at home.
INDIANS VS. STRIPERS: Jose Osuna (.333, 9-for-27, five doubles, two RBI) has done well against Stripers pitching this season. Indy is hitting a collective .236 (59-for-250) in eight games vs. Gwinnett, going 2-6 overall.
PACE CAR: Indy's offense is in the top three of eight categories in the International League. They rank first in average (.274), hits (836), doubles (221), OBP (.338), slugging (.424) and are tied for first in sac bunts (30). They are also second in stolen bases (72) and total bases (1293).
