Syracuse, NY - Led by Irving Falu's three hits and three RBIs, the Syracuse Chiefs exploded for 11 runs and ten hits en route to an 11-5 win over the Durham Bulls on Tuesday night at NBT Bank Stadium. The Chiefs took advantage of their opportunities, going 7-for-15 with runners in scoring position.
Durham (54-40) started the scoring in the top of the first inning against Phillips Valdez. Kean Wong led off with a walk. With Willy Adames batting, Wong stole second base and moved to third on the play when the Pedro Severino's throw to second bounced into center field. Adames then worked a walk to put runners at first and third. With Brandon Lowe batting, a passed ball allowed Adames to go to second and Wong to score for a 1-0 Bulls lead. Lowe then walked to place runners at first and second. Christian Arroyo grounded into a doubled play where Lowe was out at second and Arroyo was out at first, but Adames went to third. Brandon Snyder followed with a triple that scored Adames to give Durham a 2-0 edge. Johnny Field then singled home Snyder to make it a 3-0 Bulls advantage.
Syracuse (39-55) responded in the bottom of the first. Matt Reynolds and Andrew Stevenson both walked to begin the frame. José Marmolejos then reached on a fielding error at first that scored Reynolds and allowed Stevenson to go to third as the Chiefs trimmed the Bulls lead to 3-1. Pedro Severino then grounded into a double play, but Stevenson scored from third to pull Syracuse within one, 3-2.
The Chiefs stormed ahead in the second. Chris Dominguez reached second base on a two-base throwing error on Adames at short. Jaff Decker then walked to put runners at first and second. Two batters later, Falu doubled down the left-field line, scoring Dominguez to tie the game, 3-3. Reynolds followed with a triple to the center-field wall, scoring Decker from third and Falu from second, giving the Chiefs their first lead of the game, 5-3. Reynolds then scored on a Stevenson groundout to second base for a 6-3 Syracuse advantage.
The Bulls got a run back in the top of the fifth. With one out, Adames doubled and moved to third on a wild pitch. Lowe knocked Adames in with a sacrifice fly that cut the Chiefs edge to two, 6-4.
Syracuse widened the margin in the bottom of the fifth. Stevenson led off with a walk against Chih-Wei Hu before stealing second base. Marmolejos then singled to put runners on first and third. Two batters later, Yadiel Hernandez singled home Stevenson for a 7-4 Chiefs lead. Two batters after that, Decker singled to score Marmolejos and make it 8-4. Drew Ward brought home Hernandez with a single to put Syracuse up 9-4. Then, Falu singled to right field to score both Decker and Ward, extending the Chiefs lead to seven, 11-4.
Durham scored a run in the seventh on a Wong solo home run to right field to make it an 11-5 game, but that is as close as Durham would come for the rest of the game.
The Chiefs and Bulls finish their three-game series on Wednesday afternoon. LHP Tommy Milone will be on the mound for Syracuse with first pitch scheduled for noon.
