Marte, Peterson Highlight Gwinnett's 7-2 Win

LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. - Luis Marte had two hits and four RBIs, while Dustin Peterson made a spectacular catch in right field to highlight the Gwinnett Stripers' 7-2 win over the Indianapolis Indians Tuesday night at Coolray Field.

Marte's first hit of the game was a bases-clearing double that came off right-hander Alex McCrae in the second inning. McCrae gave up singles to Peterson and Sean Kazmar Jr. to start the frame, then hit Alex Jackson with a pitch. Marte followed with a double into the left field corner, bringing all three runners home for a 3-0 lead.

He later planted an RBI single into right field in the seventh inning, capping the scoring at 7-2. Marte, who was promoted to Gwinnett on July 12, now has four multi-hit efforts in five games with the club and is batting .500 (10-for-20) with seven RBIs.

Peterson, who himself has been hot in July to the tune of a .333 average (18-for-54) through 14 games, also had a two-hit night. But it was his highlight-reel play in the seventh inning that earned raucous applause from the Coolray Field faithful.

Pablo Reyes, leading off the inning against starter Matt Wisler, slammed a line drive headed toward the right field corner. The sprinting Peterson flagged the ball down, but it popped high out of his glove. While crashing to the ground, he was able to snare the ball out of the air to make the out, saving a surefire extra-base hit.

The superb catch topped a night in which the Stripers' offense recorded a double-digit hit total (13) for the third consecutive game. It included Jackson's first Triple-A hit - an RBI double in the third inning - and a Carlos Franco fourth-inning RBI single that again tied him for the International League lead in RBIs (58).

Meanwhile, Wisler (W, 4-4) notched his second straight quality start with a 7.0-inning performance. He allowed six hits, two earned runs and three walks while fanning six. Chad Bell pitched 2.0 perfects innings with three strikeouts to end the game.

Gwinnett's rotation is now 6-1 with a 1.85 ERA (13 ER in 63.1 IP) and eight quality starts in the last 10 games, with the Stripers going 8-2 in that stretch.

McCrae (L, 3-8) was chased after 4.0 innings, dishing nine hits, six earned runs and two walks.

Austin Riley was 3-for-5 in the win. Franco, Peterson, Kazmar and Marte had two hits apiece. Rio Ruiz was 0-for-4 with a sacrifice fly that came in the second inning.

For Indianapolis, Jason Martin went 2-for-4 with a double.

The Stripers (43-52) and Indians (50-43) continue their series Wednesday at 7:05 p.m. from Coolray Field. Gwinnett has not announced a starter, while Indianapolis will go with southpaw Brandon Waddell (4-4, 5.19 ERA). First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. Dave Lezotte has the play-by-play call on 97.7 and 93.5 FM "The Other Side of the River" beginning at 6:35 p.m.
