LAST NIGHT: Jake Elmore homered and doubled as part of a 3-hit night, but the Indians dropped the series opener to Gwinnett last night, 5-2. The Tribe took a 1-0 lead in the second inning on Elmore's sixth two-bagger of the season, a line drive to left-center field that brought home Christian Kelley from first base. Gwinnett evened the score in the fourth on a sac fly by former Indian Pedro Florimon, and they took the lead for good in the fifth with three more runs, all with two outs. Austin Riley doubled home a pair to make it 3-1 and after being summonded from the bullpen, Geoff Hartlieb had his first of two balks in the game to push Indy's deficit to three. Elmore's solo shot opened the ninth and provided the final margin. Kyle Wright (W, 1-1) allowed one run over 5.0 innings while Alex McRae (L, 1-2) gave up four runs on seven hits in 4.2 innings pitched.

TONIGHT: The Indians and Stripers continue their three-game series tonight as two talented pitchers take the mound. Right-hander JT Brubaker (2-0, 1.69) will start on nine days rest for Indy. Southpaw Sean Newcomb (0-1, 3.18), who was Atlanta's top prospect prior to the 2016 season and No. 24 overall according to Baseball America that year, gets the nod for Gwinnett. Newcomb, 25, opened the season with Atlanta, where he went 0-0 with a 4.38 ERA (6er/12.1ip), eight walks and five strikeouts in three starts combined. He spent the entire 2018 campaign in the big leagues, going 12-9 with a 3.90 ERA (71er/164.0ip) in 31 games (30 starts). Command has always been the issue for Newcomb, however; he has a career walks-per-9.0-innings rate of 4.80 (336bb/630.1ip).

WE'VE SEEN YOU BEFORE: The Indians have faced Stripers starter Sean Newcomb once in his career. The outing came on June 2, 2017 at Victory Field, a game the Indians won 4-1. Right-hander Jameson Taillon made a rehab start for the Tribe that day, allowing one unearned run on three hits with six strikeouts over 5.0 innings of work. Newcomb tossed 6.0 frames, surrendering two earned runs on four hits and three walks with seven punchouts.

UNFAMILIAR TERRITORY: Kevin Newman joined the Tribe on a rehab assignment yesterday. He started in center field and hit leadoff, going 1-for-4 with a walk and strikeout. The outfield appearance was the first of his professional career. Prior to yesterday's game, he had played in 387 games (379 starts) at shortstop and another 30 games (27 starts) at second base between the minors and majors.

HE WANTS SOME (EL)MORE: Jake Elmore had three of Indy's seven hits last night, including his sixth double and first home run of the season. The multi-hit performance was his team-leading eighth of the season, and he joined Cole Tucker in having a trio of three-hit games already this year. His season average sits at a league-best .426 (23-for-54), a clip that is tied with 2013/2015 Tribe outfielder Travis Snider (Reno) for the fourth-highest average in Minor League Baseball. Winston-Salem's Luis Robert (.475), Hagerstown's KJ Harrison (.438) and Tulsa's Omar Estevez (.429) are the only three players in MiLB with higher averages.

NOT AN AVERAGE MONTH: With seven games remaining this month, Jake Elmore is attempting to become just the fourth Tribe player since 2005 to post an average of .400 or greater (min. 75 ABs) in a single month. Brock Holt hit .432 in August 2012, Matt Hague hit .402 in June 2011 and Gregory Polanco batted .400 in April 2014.

RUNS MATTER: The Indians have scored four or more runs in 12 of their 17 games so far this season, going 9-3 in those affairs. The Tribe are just 1-4 when scoring three or fewer runs this season and have scored three or less runs in four straight games for the first time since July 15-18, 2018. Since the beginning of the 2017 season, the Tribe are 138-43 (.762) when scoring four-plus runs and 24-94 (.203) when scoring three or less.

NEVER SAY NEVER: Dovydas Neverauskas has been lights out in Indianapolis' bullpen this year. The Lithuanian has allowed just four batters to reach base (1 hit, 1 hit batter, 2 walks) while striking out seven in 5.0 innings of work. Opponents are batting just .067 (1-for-15) against him.

MONTANA'S MONTAGE: Montana DuRapau tossed a 1-2-3 eighth inning with two more strikeouts last night, giving him eight punchouts in 7.1 innings pitched spanning seven appearances this season. IL batters are hitting a meager .130 (3-for-23) against him.
