Toledo Mud Hens News Release
Charlotte N.C. - The Toledo Mud Hens fell 11-9 in extra innings to the Charlotte Knights Tuesday evening at BB&T Ballpark.
The Mud Hens (6-11) tied the game at eight in the eighth inning to force extra innings, but the Knights (13-6) walked off with a three-run homerun in the bottom of the tenth.
Four Toledo players launched homeruns in the game as Victor Reyes and Jacob Robson hit two-run blasts in the seventh inning, and Harold Castro and Daz Cameron belted solo long-balls in the second and fourth innings respectively. The Mud Hens were led at the plate by Josh Lester who went 3-for-4 at the dish with three RBI and a walk.
Toledo jumped on the board early as H. Castro hit his second long-ball of the year with two-outs and the bases empty in the top of the second inning giving the Mud Hens a 1-0 advantage.
Cameron led off the fourth inning with a solo blast over the right field fence, extending Toledo's lead to two.
Mud Hens starter LHP Matt Hall was on fire through the first four innings, shutting down the Knights allowing just three hits while punching out seven batters.
In the fifth inning, Matt Skole was able to put Charlotte on the board with a one-out solo homerun to left field. Brandon Guyer then earned a six-pitch walk followed by Charlie Tilson recording an infield single. Danny Mendick tied the game with an RBI double down the left field line scoring Guyer. Alcides Escobar then gave the Knights the lead with a single to center field bringing in Tilson and Mendick pushing the score to 4-2. Daniel Palka then earned the fifth hit of the inning with a single, prompting Doug Mienkiewicz to make a pitching change with one out and runners on first and second. Hall went four and one third innings allowing four earned runs on eight hits while walking one and fanning eight. RHP Eduardo Jimenez came on in relief and struck out the first batter he faced before walking Zack Collins to load the bases with two outs. Jimenez then retired Seby Zavala on strikes to end the inning.
Dawel Lugo reached on a one-out single to give Toledo a runner in the seventh inning. With two-out, Reyes tied the game with a two-run blast over the left field wall. Bobby Wilson kept the two-out rally alive with a single through the right side of the infield. Robson then took the first pitch of his at bat over the right field wall giving the Mud Hens a 6-4 lead.
Jimenez night came to an end after one and two-thirds hitless shutout innings. He allowed one walk while K-ing three before handing the ball to RHP Eduardo Paredes who came on to pitch the seventh.
Walks to Mendick and Palka in the seventh inning proved costly as Mendick moved to third on a D.J. Peterson fly out giving the Knights runners on the corners with two outs. Palka then stole second and Mendick scored on the throw to second. The ball squirted away from Wilson behind the dish and Palka moved to third. Collins drew a walk giving Charlotte runners on first and third for the second time in the inning. Zavala then hit a broken-bat single to right, bringing in Palka to tie the game at six. Skole earned a walk to load the bases brining an end to Paredes' outing as LHP Caleb Thielbar came in to pitch. Thielbar hit Guyer on his second pitch giving the Knights a 7-6 lead. Tilson then singled to center scoring Zavala. Cameron fired a strike from center to Wilson who was able to tag Skole for the third out of the inning as Charlotte took an 8-6 lead into the eighth.
Cameron led off the eighth inning with a single and moved to third as Willi Castro followed suit with his second single of the contest. Lester hit a line drive off the left-center field wall clearing the bases and tying the game at eight. Lester moved to third on a hard groundout to the pitcher.
Toledo took advantage of the placed runner in the tenth inning as W. Castro sacrifice bunted Cameron to third. Lester then singled to bring in Cameron and give the Mud Hens a 9-8 lead.
RHP Jose Cisnero came in to close the game for Toledo in the tenth as Thielbar exited allowing one hit while fanning five in two and one third innings of work.
In the bottom half of the tenth, Preston Tucker reached first on a one-out walk. Then with a full-count and two outs, Mendick hit a three-run walk-off homerun to left field giving the Knights an 11-9 victory.
