(Traverse City, MI) - Chuck Weaver (5-5) dominated game one and Buddy Sosnoskie's home run put the Florence Freedom (32-43) over the top in game two as they swept the Traverse City Beach Bums (31-46) in Wednesday's double header by scores of 2-0 and 5-4.
With the win the Freedom have their third three-game winning streak and they earn their first road series victory of the season.
Game one was the Weaver show as the right-hander tossed a complete game one-hit shutout. He allowed only one hit, walking one and striking out seven in the victory. The all-star received some help from his fellow all-star Cole Miles in the second inning as Miles made a spectacular diving catch to end the frame as the Beach Bums left two men stranded. They wouldn't get another runner on base in the game. Weaver retired the final 17 men he faced in order.
Offensively the Freedom were able to take the lead in the fourth inning against Traverse City starter Tanner Tripp (1-8). Sam Eberle doubled to start the frame. One out later Adam Taylor drew a walk. Then with two away Zak Blair delivered a clutch RBI single to score Eberle and put Florence up 1-0.
They added another run in the top of the seventh. With one out, Sosnoskie singled. He stole second and advanced to third as the throw went into center field. After Eberle walked, Jacob Tanis drove Sosnoskie in with a sacrifice fly.
That was more than enough for Weaver whose complete game shutout lowered his ERA to 2.02 on the season.
Game two was a back-and-forth battle as the Freedom jumped out to an early 2-0 lead against Traverse City starter Alex Phillips (3-7). Blair and Chance Ross singled to start the first. After an Eberle grounder moved them over, Tanis walked to load the bases. That's when Rob Kelly came up big with a two-RBI single to right field.
But the Beach Bums responded against Dave Middendorf in the bottom of the first. Greg Harisis tripled to begin the inning and Jeff DeBlieux drove him home with a sacrifice fly.
The game remained 2-1 in favor of Florence until they tallied an insurance run in the top of the fifth. Gaby Juarbe singled and Blair bunted him to second. After a grounder moved him to third, Eberle singled Juarbe home to make it 3-1 Florence.
However Traverse City tied the game in the bottom of the fifth. With one away DeBlieux doubled and Jose Vargas drew a walk. Then Yazy Arbelo singled home DeBlieux and Jovan Rosa singled home Vargas to tie the game at three.
That was it for Middendorf as Pete Levitt (1-3) entered the game. He struck out Scott Woodward, walked Jake Rhodes, and got Josh Miller to ground out to end the inning.
Levitt would get the win as Florence took the lead for good in the top of the sixth. Ryan Solberg tripled and Sosnoskie launched his fourth home run of the season to put the Freedom up 5-3.
Traverse City pushed across an unearned run in the bottom of the sixth. But Daniel DeSimone did not allow any further damage in the inning and Ed Kohout finished off the Beach Bums in the seventh for his second save of the season. Traverse City got the tying run to third but Kohout struck out Scott Taylor to end the game.
Florence goes for the series sweep on Thursday as Michael O'Neal (2-3, 5.40 ERA) takes the mound. First pitch is set for 7:05 p.m. eastern time. The game can be heard online at www.allinbroadcasting.com/Florence.html.
