(SCHAUMBURG, ILLINOIS) - The Evansville Otters (45-30) pulled within a run of Schaumburg in the eighth, but a four run bottom half of the inning sealed a 6-1 Boomers win on Wednesday afternoon.

Schaumburg leapt ahead early against Otters starter Jose Velez. The Boomers got a one-out walk for Mark Nelson in the second inning, who then moved up on two wild pitches and scored on a Ty Nelson RBI single to right field.

Up 1-0, the Boomers tallied another run in the third. Infielder Jordan Dean led off the inning with a single and scored later in the frame on a wild pitch.

Schaumburg starter Eddie Cody held the Otters from scoring early. He worked around a two runner jam to keep Evansville from plating any runs in the second. Cody had two lengthy stretches without a batter reaching base. He retired seven batters in a row from the second to the fourth inning and then another nine straight batters later in the game.

Velez kept Schaumburg scoreless through the rest of his outing. The lefty pitched 6.0 innings, allowing just two runs on three hits in the defeat.

Trailing 2-0, Evansville pulled within a run in the 8th. Outfielder J.R. Higley led off the inning with a double and scored on a Shayne Houck RBI single later in the inning. Evansville then put runners at the corners with two outs but reliever Kevin Brahney got Chris Elder to ground out and end the threat.

Down 2-1, the Otters were looking for a shutout inning in the eighth but reliever Evan Mott hit the leadoff batter who came around to score later in the inning on a fielder's choice and throwing error to the plate. Losing 3-1, Evansville turned to reliever Brandon Shimo with the bases loaded and two outs but catcher Michael Valadez hit a bases clearing double for the 6-1 lead in the eventual five run win.

Game three of the series will take place on Thursday night. First pitch is set for 6:30 pm CDT at Schaumburg Baseball Stadium. Evansville will have RHP William Oliver (1-0, 4.77 ERA) on the mound against Schaumburg righty Cal Bowling (6-6, 5.75 ERA).

The game will be broadcast live on WUEV 91.5 FM. Play by play announcer Mike Radomski will be on the air with the pregame show beginning at 6:45 pm CDT.
