Traverse City Beach Bums News Release
TRAVERSE CITY, MI - The Florence Freedom used a standout pitching performance to take a 2-0 win in game one of Wednesday's doubleheader before fending off a late Traverse City Beach Bums charge to take game two as well 5-4.
In the opener, Chuck Weaver allowed just one hit to Traverse City, a Kevin Taylor single in the second inning. Weaver (5-5) retired the final 17 batters he faced to pick up the victory. His offense provided him with a run in the fourth on a Zak Blair RBI single and another in the seventh on a Jacob Tanis sacrifice fly to make it 2-0.
Tanner Tripp (1-8) authored his fifth quality start of the year, but ended up on the wrong side of the decision. He allowed a run on five hits in six innings with a strikeout.
Florence jumped out in front as well in the nightcap on a two-run single in the first inning from Rob Kelly. Traverse City got a run right back though as Greg Harisis led off with a triple and scored on a sacrifice fly from Jeff DeBlieux to make it 2-1.
The score stayed that way until Sam Eberle poked a single up the middle with two outs in the fifth to up the Freedom advantage to 3-1. The Beach Bums came back to tie the game in the last of the fifth thanks to RBI singles from Yazy Arbelo and Jovan Rosa.
However, Buddy Sosnoskie blasted a two-run homer in the top of the sixth to give the Freedom the lead for good. Jose Vargas brought the Beach Bums back to within a run in the last of the frame on a sacrifice fly. TC got the tying run to third base with two outs in the seventh inning but Ed Kohout picked up his second save of the year by striking out Kevin Taylor.
Pete Levitt (1-3) picked up the win in relief for Florence with a scoreless 0.2 innings. Dave Middendorf started, but didn't factor in the decision after allowing three runs on nine hits in 4.1 innings. Alex Phillips (3-7) took the loss for the Beach Bums as he gave up five runs on nine hits in six innings.
