July 28, 2012 - Frontier League (FL)
Florence Y'alls News Release

Florence, KY-Brandon Mathes became the second straight Freedom starter to throw a complete game shutout, as the Freedom rolled to an impressive 14-0 win over the Evansville Otters on Saturday night. Mathes threw the third straight complete game, joining Alec Lewis, and Sean Gregory, who threw the other complete game shutout Friday night against the Washington Wild Things.

Mathes needed just 104 pitches to hurl the five hit shutout as he also got plenty of help from his defense and offense. In the 1st inning, the Otters loaded the bases with only one out, but it was Mathes getting Runey Davis to hit into an inning ending double play. Mathes induced three double plays in the game all three of the 6-4-3 variety.

The game was actually scoreless heading into the Freedom's 4th inning but that's when the Freedom offense stole the show. They sent fifteen batters to the plate, scoring nine runs on twelve hits. David Harris had two doubles in the inning, one of which produced a run. It was Peter Fatse breaking up the scoreless game with his RBI single scoring Harris to give the Freedom a 1-0 lead. After a pair of infield hits from Jim Jacquot and Stephen Cardullo, Drew Rundle singled home Fatse for a 2-0 advantage. Kyle Bluestein then grounded out to third baseman Steve Marino which scored Jacquot for a 3-0 lead. John Malloy followed with an RBI single to make it 4-0. Pierre LePage then got in on the act with his two run single to extend the lead to 6-0. Junior Arrojo then delivered an RBI single to make it 7-0. Harris's RBI double and Jacquot's RBI singles capped off the nine run scoring outburst.

The Freedom offense then put a five spot on the board in the 7th. Edwin Padua pinch hit for LePage with two outs and lined a double to right center. Arrojo scored Padua with his second RBI single of the night. Ryan Skellie pinch hit for Fatse, and shot one to the gap for an RBI double to make it 11-0. Jacquot then put the finishing touches on the Otters pitching staff with a three run homer to left center for a 14-0 lead.

The Freedom offense produced twenty hits, as Arrojo, Harris, Jacquot, and Rundle all achieved three hit games. Jacquot led the offense with 4 RBI's as Arrojo and LePage each had 2 RBI apiece. Mathes improved to 1-0 with his gem on the mound as he struck out four Otters and pitched a 1-2-3 9th.

The Freedom and Otters will play a day/night doubleheader on Sunday which will conclude the three game series. Game One will feature Evansville lefty Matt Crim(1-7, 4.42) as the Freedom will send LHP Brent Choban(0-0 1.80) to the mound. Game one will start at 1:05 with game two slated for a 6:05 first pitch. You can listen to both games starting at 12:50 with Steve Jarnicki on Real Talk 1160 AM and realtalk1160.com.
