Miners Drop One to Gateway

Marion, IL - The Southern Illinois Miners didn't begin their six game home stand the way they would have liked to as the Gateway Grizzlies defeated the Miners 11-5. Miners starter Shawn Gilblair gave up six runs in 6.2 innings to earn his fourth loss of the season. He walked two batters and struck out three.
Gateway took an early1-0 lead in the top of the second inning off Gilblair when Grizzlies second baseman Jonathan Johnson hit a base hit and RBI with two outs. Gateway added two more runs in the top of the third inning off Gilblair with two sacrifice fly's by short stop Vladimir Frias and third baseman Chris McClendon to give the Grizzlies a 3-0 lead.
The Miners came storming back in the bottom of the third inning off Grizzlie starter Max Whieldon when Jake Kaase hit an inside the park home run, his tenth home run of the season to give the Miners a 3-1 lead. Carlos Mendez added a double and a RBI with two outs to bring the Miners within one run 3-2.
The Miners tied the game off Whieldon in the bottom of the fourth inning when Jake Kaase hit a RBI double to make it a 3-3 game. Whieldon pitched four innings and gave up three runs off seven hits.
Gilblair settled down and pitched into the seventh inning. Gilblair got two outs but Gateway decided to get the bats turned on. Rogelio Noris hit a two run home run off Gilblair to give the Grizzlies a 5-3 lead. Vladimir Frias scored on a past ball. Chris McClendon hit a two RBI double off Miners reliever Ryan Quigley to give the Grizzlies a 7-3 then scored on a wild pitch by Quigley to give the Grizzlies a 8-3 lead.
The Miners scored a run in the bottom of the eighth inning off Grizzlies reliever Jordan Cudney when Cody Coffman scored on a fielder's choice by Darian Sandford to cut the Grizzlies lead to 8-4. The Grizzlies added three more runs in the top of the ninth inning off Miners reliever Ross Davis to take a 11-4 lead going into the bottom of the ninth inning.
The Miners scored a run in the bottom of the ninth off Grizzlies reliever Zac Treece when Ken Gregory hit a double and RBI to score Miners first baseman Gerardo Avila to make it a 11-5 game. Treece would shut the door on the Miners, securing the 11-5 win for Gateway.
With the loss, the Miners fall to 37-27 on the season trailing Traverse City by 3.5 games in the Eastern Division. First pitch at Rent One Park in game two of this three game set will be at 5:o5 tomorrow night.
