Miners Split Doubleheader

Evansville, IN - The Southern Illinois Miners and Evansville Otters split a double header at Bosse Field. Evansville took game one by a score of 3-1. Southern Illinois defeated Evansville in game two 5-3.

In game one, Miners starter Brian Fowler and Otters starter Matt Zielinski were pitching strong early on in the game. Fowler only gave up one hit through two innings. Zielinski struck out three batters in two innings. In the bottom of the third inning, Brian Fowler gave up a two run home run to Otters outfielder Taylor Black to give the Otters a 2-0 lead.

Brian Fowler pitched five innings and gave up seven hits. He allowed two runs and struck out six batters. Evansville scored another run in the bottom of the sixth inning off Miners reliever Anthony Collazo to take a 3-0 lead. Zielinski pitched five strong innings and only gave up three hits. He walked one and struck out seven batters. Otters reliever Patrick Crider pitched a scoreless sixth inning.

The Miners scored one run in the top of the seventh inning as Will Block hit a base hit and a RBI to make it a 3-1 game off Otters closer Eric Massingham. Massingham shut the door on the Miners the rest of the way and earned his 16th save of the season. The Otters won the game 3-1.

In game two, the Miners trying to avoid the sweep got an early lead off Otters starter Bryce Morrow. After Darian Sandford led off the game with a walk, Jake Kaase walked to put runners on first and second with no one out. After Chad Maddox grounded out into a double play, Ken Gregory brought in Sandford on an error by Otters short stop Luis Parache to give the Miners a 1-0 lead.

The Miners added two more runs off Morrow with a base hit and RBI by Darian Sandford and Jake Kaase walking with the bases loaded to give the Miners a 3-0 lead. Evansville scored a run in the bottom of the third inning when Luis Parache hit a base hit and RBI off Miners starter Daniel Calhoun to make it a 3-1 lead for Southern Illinois.

The Miners scored another run in the top of the fifth inning off Morrow with a base hit and RBI by Jason Ganek to give the Miners a 4-1 lead. Morrow went five innings and gave up four runs (one earned). He struck out three batters and walked six. The Miners took a 5-1 lead when Will Block hit his fourth home run of the season off Otters reliever David Kubiak in the top of the seventh inning.

Evansville tried to rally in the bottom of the seventh inning off Miners starter Daniel Calhoun. Calhoun gave up two runs off a a base hit and RBI by Taylor Black. Albert Ayala came in relief of Calhoun with two outs in the bottom of the seventh and gave up a double by Greg Fontenot which scored Black. The Miners would hold on and win the game 5-3. Calhoun earned his fourth win of the season Ayala earned his eighth save.

With the split, the Miners are at 37-26 on the season trailing Traverse City by three games in the Eastern Division. The Miners begin a six game home stand tomorrow night at Rent One Park. The Gateway Grizzlies will begin the home stand with the Miners. First pitch is at 7:05 pm.
