Evansville Otters News Release
(EVANSVILLE, INDIANA) - The Evansville Otters split a doubleheader with the Southern Illinois Miners on Friday night, winning the first game 3-1 and losing the second game 5-3.
Second baseman Taylor Black led the Otters offensively with five hits, scoring two runs and three RBIs.
Black put the Otters on the board in the first game with a two-run, second inning home run. Ahead by a pair of runs, Evansville would strike again in the sixth inning with a run-producing double from outfielder DeAngelo Mack.
Closer Eric Massingham then entered the seventh inning with a 3-0 edge, only surrendering a run, and holding on for the two run win.
Starting pitcher Matt Zielinski (5-5) put on a stellar game one performance for the Otters. He allowed no runs on three hits over 5.0 innings.
Southern Illinois then responded and took the early lead in game two. The Miners scored one run in the first and two more in the second. Down 3-0, Evansville clawed back with a run in the bottom of the third only to see Southern Illinois rally for the next pair of scores.
The Otters trailed 5-1 into the seventh inning only to stage one last rally. Black hit another RBI single to the gap and infielder Greg Fontenot roped a two-out double to bring the tying run to the plate. Parache then turned on a 2-1 pitch, driving it deep down the right field line, only to see it curve foul. Parache popped up later in the at-bat to secure the 5-3 Miners win.
Former North High School graduate Daniel Calhoun (4-2) earned the win in game two with 6.2 innings of six hit ball.
Evansville is now 27-36 as Southern Illinois is 37-26.
The Otters will begin a two-day, three-game series on Saturday night at the Florence Freedom. Left-hander Garrett Bullock (3-5, 3.07 Earned Run Average) will start for the Otters as righty Brandon Mathes (0-0, 5.12 ERA) will be on the hill for the Freedom.
