
Miners Acquire Gerardo Avila

Marion, IL - The Southern Illinois Miners announced the acquisition of first baseman Gerardo Avila from the Wichita Wingnuts for a player to be named later. Avila spent time with the River City Rascals earlier this season before joining the Wingnuts. Avila brings a large amount of minor league baseball experience to the Southern Illinois Miners.
"We are excited to add Gerardo to our club", Miners manager Mike Pinto said. "He is an excellent defensive first baseman and adds a power middle of the order bat to our lineup. He has nine years of professional experience and brings an awful lot of professional at bats to the Miners."
This season with Wichita, Avila hit .296 in 18 games. He registered 21 hits in 71 at bats and brought in 12 runs with two home runs. He stole one base and walked three times. With River City, Avila played in 41 games and hit .282 with two home runs and 26 RBI. He registered 44 hits with four doubles. He stole four bases and walked 17 times. In Veracruz, he played in 16 games. He had 14 hits and nine RBI's with one home run.
Last season Avila spent time in the North American League playing for Rio Grande Valley and Yuma. Combined with Rio Grande Valley and Yuma, Avila hit .399 with 14 home runs and 47 RBI's. He had 67 hits in 45 games and hit 13 doubles with three stolen bases and 11 walks. Also, Avila played with El Paso in the American Association. Avila hit .300 with six home runs and 22 RBI's. He registered 27 hits in 21 games and walked six times.
In 2010, Avila played with Myrtle Beach (A+, ATL) in the Carolina League and Fort Werth of the American Association. With Myrtle Beach, Avila hit .230 in 41 games and hit 7 home runs with 22 RBI's. He recorded 35 hits with six doubles and one triple. He stole one base and scored 20 runs. With Fort Werth, he hit .344 in 26 games with four home runs and 23 RBI's. He hit six doubles, one triple and stole one base.
In 2009, Avila played with Everett Aqua Sox (A-, SEA) of the Northwest League. Gerardo hit .333 with 13 home runs and 54 RBI's in 54 games with the Aqua Sox. He hit 10 doubles, two triples and recorded 71 hits with 32 runs.
In 2008, Avila played with both High Desert (A+) of the California League and Wisconsin (A) of the Midwest League. Combined in 24games, Avila hit one home run with five RBI's. He hit two triples and one double in 80 at bat's. He recorded 19 hits and scored eight runs. He walked five times combined as well.
In 2007, Gerardo played for Wisconsin (A, SEA). In 25 games, Avila got 2o hits, four doubles, one triple and one home run with six RBI's. He walked seven times and scored five runs.
In 2006, Avila played for Wisconsin and the Arizona League Mariners (Rk). Combined in 55 games, Avila hit seven home runs and drove in 37 RBI's. He hit eight doubles and two triples. He stole four bases and was caught stealing twice. He walked eight times and scored 27 runs.
