Wild Things Defeat Lake Erie 5-4

AVON, Ohio - Chris Smith earned his seventh win of the season by pitching six innings of three-run ball as the Washington Wild Things, presented by Washington Financial, took game one of their series with the Lake Erie Crushers by as score of 5-4.

The Wild Things trailed early after two innings but came roaring back with four runs in the fourth inning to go ahead 4-1.

A trio of singles got Washingotn on the board, as A.J. Nunziato drove in Andrew heck with an RBI single to right. Heck singled to lead off the inning one batter before Benusa reached on a single to put runners at first and second.

Newly acquired Mark Samuelson followed with a single to center to score Benusa to put Washington ahead.

The Wild Things offense would continue to churn out runs.

A.J. Nunziato then scored on a wild pitch. One pitch later Shain Stoner scored Samuelson with a sacrifice fly to right field.

The Crushers came right back in the fifth, scoring two runs to make it a one run ballgame at 4-3.

That's when A.J. Nunziato came through with his first home run of the season to give the Wild Things a much-needed insurance run in the eighth inning and a 5-3 lead.

In the bottom half of the eighth, the Crushers came within one courtesy of an RBI triple to right field.

Orlando Santos came on in the ninth for the Things to earn the save, striking out Jason Taylor for the final out of the game.

The Wild Things and Crushers Meet for the second game of the series Sunday. First pitch is set for 5:05 with pregame coverage beginning at 4:55 on WJPA. Casey Barnes will be on the mound for the Wild Things opposite Paul Fagan for Lake Erie.
