Four-Goal 3rd Whips Wheeling into Win Column

WHEELING, WV- The Wheeling Nailers finished their weekend with a bang in more ways than one on Sunday afternoon, as they took on the Kalamazoo Wings at WesBanco Arena. Trailing 3-2 after two, Wheeling lit the lamp four times in the third period, coming from behind to defeat the Wings, 6-4. Max MacKay netted his first and second professional goals in the game, while Paul Crowder dished out four assists, as the Nailers earned five of six possible points during the weekend.
The visiting Wings got off to a fast start, scoring just 1:43 into the contest. Alexandre Grenier centered the puck to Kory Karlander, who hammered in a one-timer from the slot. Grenier set up a second goal just prior to the midway mark of the first period. This time, the recipient was John Armstrong, who also connected on a one-timer from in close. The Nailers got on the board 1:49 later, when Cam Fergus roofed his third shorthanded goal of the season from the left side of the crease. Paul Crowder got the lone assist, as Wheeling trailed 2-1 after one.
Kalamazoo upped the lead at the 7:43 mark of the middle frame. This time, Grenier did the scoring, taking a lead pass from Armstrong, and beating Peter Delmas on the left side of the cage. Then, with 1:32 left in the period, the Nailers begin to turn the tide. While playing on the man advantage, Keven Veilleux managed to dribble a puck through Joel Martin, cutting the deficit back to one, at 3-2.
With just 1:52 expired in the third period, Wheeling got the equalizer. Paul Crowder dished a pass to Max MacKay in the left circle. MacKay wired in his first professional goal on a one-timer. With a little less than nine minutes gone in the third, the Nailers took their first lead of the day. Peter Lenes tipped the puck through the crease to Jordy Trottier, who banged home his second goal of the season. From there, the home team refused to look back, as Chris Barton made the score 5-3, finishing off a pass from Crowder, who tallied his fourth assist of the game. Yann Sauve cut the lead to one for the Wings, before MacKay gave the game its 6-4 final, thanks to an empty netter.
Peter Delmas got the win for Wheeling, denying 18 of the 22 shots he faced. Joel Martin was the losing goaltender for Kalamazoo, allowing five goals on 40 shots.
The Nailers will play host to the Elmira Jackals on Wednesday night at 7:00.
