Four-Game Home Stand Begins with Kalamazoo
June 5, 2015 - Northwoods League (Northwoods)
Green Bay Rockers News Release
Green Bay, Wis.- A 2-8, last place, Kalamazoo Growlers team heads into play against the 4-5 Bullfrogs in Northwoods League South Division action tonight. The game is slated for a 6:35PM first pitch. It's "Social Media Night" at Joannes Stadium.
After a three-game mid-week set against Wisconsin Rapids (1) and Madison (2), the Bullfrogs stride in confident after a 7-3 victory Thursday night at the Warner Park "Duck Pond."
"It was good to see us get some things going," said shortstop Matt De La Rosa. "The bunt game was there, we had some good steals, and it's always good to come out with a win especially when the offense had been struggling and we could put up some runs like that."
A scrappy Bullfrogs squad hosts a struggling Growlers team that is hitting for just a .190 AVG (Last NWL). Meanwhile, the Bullfrogs have a pitching staff 2.90 ERA (2nd NWL) in 79.0 IP. In the last three games, Green Bay starters (Harrison, Ellenbest, Martinez) have spun 19 innings, with 17 strikeouts, and allowed just five earned runs.
Yesterday's seven run output also was a welcomed improvement. In the prior four games, the Bullfrogs had only plated six runs. On a humid Thursday evening victory the hard-hit meter was higher, the runs were manufactured in a variety of ways including extra-base hits, bunts, and premium base running, and the Bullfrogs made Madison feel uncomfortable.
"I thought our guys did a great job of controlling their at-bats," said Handelsman. "I'm really proud of our guys. That was really a great team win."
Now Skip Handelsman's club will look to improve on their own playing grounds. They are just 1-3 at Joannes Stadium and haven't won at home since May 27th against La Crosse.
Green Bay will start hurler Nathan Disch (Jacksonville) who was impressive in his first outing against St. Cloud on May 30th. Although the result of the suspended game is not yet final, Disch pitched 5 1/3 innings, gave up no earned runs, and struck out seven.
Tonight is "Social Media Night" where every inning fans can win prizes and be a part of the in-game experience by interacting with the Bullfrogs on Twitter. Follow @GBBullfrogs to participate.
