Winnipeg Goldeyes News Release
After two nights of offensive outbursts that flirted with franchise history, the Winnipeg Goldeyes bats came to a grinding halt Sunday afternoon.
Under tremendous heat and being watched by 5,466 fans at Shaw Park, the Goldeyes (38-33) mustered just one run, falling 4-1 to the Sioux Falls Pheasants (27-34).
Sioux Falls were helped along by two big home runs, a two-run shot in the fifth by Henry Contreras and a solo dinger by Reggie Ambercrombie in the sixth - putting them ahead for good. The lone Fish run came thanks to the bat of Brian Myrow, who drove in Price Kendall in the first after he had hit a double.
"Baseball is a game of cycles," said Kendall. "Some days you go out and get 20 hits and some days you don't. Their pitcher out there was pretty good, he changed his speeds well and throws a lot of balls and we were probably a little over-aggressive."
Goldeyes starter Chris Salamida and Pheasants starter Ben Moore, who pitched for Winnipeg in 2006 and 2007, lived up to their record. The latter, though, recorded the win as he iced the Goldeyes bats after their fiery 40 hits and 37 runs in two nights on Friday and Saturday. Moore pitched five innings, allowed just three hits, a run, and struck out eight.
"He doesn't throw that hard and everything is moving," said Kendall. "He's not a guy where every pitch is 90 mph, and most of his stuff are balls. They start in the zone and then fall out of it so it makes him difficult."
Salamida, meanwhile, took the loss to fall to 7-2 on the year. He pitched six innings and allowed five hits, three earned runs, and struck out five.
With the win, Sioux Falls earned a split with Winnipeg for the four-game series and now the Goldeyes will look ahead to a three-game series at home against the Sioux City Explorers, a team who has not played in Winnipeg since 2005. The expected Goldeyes starter for Tuesday is Isaac Hess, who brings a 4-1 record and an ERA of 4.14 into the game.
The game will be broadcast on Sports Radio 1290 and tickets can be purchased by calling 1-855-GOLDEYE, clicking on Ticketmaster.ca or by visiting any Ticketmaster outlet, including the one inside Shaw Park.
