Captains Come Back from Four Runs Down But Ninth-Inning Single Gives Gary 5-4 Win

SHREVEPORT, La.---Mike Massaro's two-out, two-strike RBI single in the top of the ninth gave Gary SouthShore the winning run as Shreveport-Bossier was defeated 5-4 and the RailCats completed a three game sweep of the Captains at Fair Grounds Field Sunday evening. Shreveport-Bossier has now lost a season-high five games in a row.

With the score tied at four and the bases empty in the top of the ninth, Chris Carrara hit a double off Captains reliever Jameson Maj (0-3). He then took third on a passed ball by catcher Scott Thomas, allowing him to come home on Massaro's second hit of the game. The loss drops the Captains to 28-33 on the year and 13.5 games behind the Grand Prairie AirHogs in the American Association South Division.

The Captains trailed 4-0 going into the bottom of the fourth but broke a 15-inning scoreless streak on RBI singles by Andres Rodriguez and Joe Urtuzuastegui. Five straight Captains hitters reached base on hits in the inning. But with the score 5-2 and the bases loaded, RailCats starter Jack Frawley got Michael Diffie to ground into an inning-ending 6-4-3 double play.

Rodriguez, who went 3-for-4 in the game, made it 4-3 with his eighth home run of the year to lead off the sixth inning against Gary reliever Brian Grening. In the seventh, Captains pinch hitter Bryan Frichter hit a single to right field and moved to second on Brian Peterson's sacrifice bunt. Frichter scored from second when Gary second baseman Brian Kolb misplayed a Robert Perry ground ball to tie the game.

The RailCats scored their first four runs early off Captains starter Joel Kirsten. They plated an unearned run on first baseman Mike Rohde's RBI double in the second. In the third, Gary got a leadoff home run by Kolb, his second of the year, then scored two more on Christian Guerrero's two-run double.

Kirsten gave up four runs (three earned) in five innings. He allowed eight hits and two walks while tying a season high with seven strike outs. Mark Haynes pitched three scoreless innings of relief for the Captains, allowing no hits and one walk while striking out three.

In addition to Rodriguez's big day at the plate, Uriak Marquez was 2-for-4 with a double. Joe Urtuzuastegui also had two hits and an RBI. Guerrero's went 2-for-4 with two RBIs and two doubles. Rohde was also 2-for-4 with two doubles and an RBI. The RailCats had six doubles in the game and 16 in the series against Shreveport-Bossier.

Will Krout (3-1) threw 2.2 innings scoreless for the RailCats and earned the win.

Shreveport-Bossier was was swept at home for the first time all year. The Captains open up a three-game series with the Wichita Wingnuts on Monday, July 18 on Jose Cuervo Margarita Monday and Ladies' Night with free admission to all women over 21 plus 1/2 price Margarita's & frozen drinks. Game time is 7:05 p.m. with gates opening at 6:05.
