Gary SouthShore Railcats News Release

SHREVEPORT, La. - The Gary SouthShore RailCats failed to hold a 4-0 lead, but came through with two outs in the ninth to register a 5-4 win over Shreveport-Bossier on Sunday night and sweep the three-game series.

The RailCats nabbed a 1-0 lead in the top of the second, taking advantage of a two-out error to score an unearned run off Shreveport-Bossier starter Joel Kirsten. Kyle Haines reached base on an error, moved to second on a wild pitch, and scored when Mike Rohde doubled deep to left.

Three more runs scored in the third as the RailCats raced to a 4-0 edge. Brian Kolb led off the inning with his second homer of the season, taking Kirsten deep to left-center. Mike Massaro and Brad Boyer collected one out singles, moved up on a passed ball, and both scored as Cristian Guerrero tucked a double inside the left field line.

Shreveport-Bossier cut the lead in half with two runs in the bottom of the fourth. RailCat starter Jack Frawley retired the first batter of the inning before the Captains posted five consecutive hits. Andres Rodriguez recorded an RBI single and Joe Urtuzuastegui added an RBI single as well. Frawley pitched five innings and departed with the lead.

The Captains battled to tie the game with single runs in the sixth and seventh against the RailCats bullpen. Rodriguez homered leading off the sixth while an error allowed the tying run to score in the seventh.

Massaro erased the tie with two outs in the ninth. Chris Carrara doubled into the right-field corner with two outs, moved to third on a passed ball, and scored the game winning run when Massaro rolled a single through the left side.

Massaro now owns a nine-game hitting streak, matching his longest of the season. The center fielder posted two hits in the contest as the RailCats put together 10, posting double digit hits in all three games of the series. Guerrero and Rohde also added a pair of hits in the affair. Will Krout, the fourth RailCat pitcher, tossed 2.2 innings to earn the victory.

The roadtrip will continue tomorrow as the RailCats (35-26), who hold a three-game lead atop the Central Division, meet the Ft. Worth Cats for the first time in franchise history at LaGRave Field. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. LHP Alain Quijano (4-3, 5.27) starts for the RailCats, who are returning to a four-man rotation, while RHP Wade Mackey (5-3, 5.05) counters for the Ft. Worth Cats.
