
Not Good for the Saints in 6-4 10 Inning Loss to X's

SIOUX CITY, IA (July 17, 2011) - The St. Paul Saints had not one chance, but two to close out the ballgame, but couldn't do it either time losing 6-4 in 10 innings on a two-run walk off homer by Sioux City Explorers catcher Tyler Goodro on Sunday evening at Lewis and Clark Park.
With the Saints leading 4-3 in the bottom of the ninth closer Robert Manuel came out to close things out. Manuel walked the lead off man TJ Bohn. He followed that with a strikeout of Goodro. Ryan Priddy then dropped down a bunt single to put runners at first and second. Pinch hitter Ray Serrano struck out, but Dustin Jones dumped a bloop double just over the glove of first baseman Richard Mercado to score Bohn and tie the game. Walker struck out Wally Backman Jr. to end the inning.
In the 10th the Saints regained the lead when Brandon Tripp walked with one out. With two outs Jonathan Van Every walked. Alex Garabedian singled up the middle to score Tripp and give the Saints a 5-4 lead.
Manuel went out for the bottom of the 10th and this time retired the lead off hitter, Derek Schermerhorn, on strikes. Kent Sakamoto then singled and advanced to third on a single by Brett Flowers. Bohn's sacrifice fly tied the game at four. On the first pitch to Goodro, he drilled one down the left field line for a two-run homer for the victory.
Saints starter Edwin Walker and Explorers starter Nick Schumacher were locked in a good battle during the night. The Saints struck first in the fifth when Steve Mays singled with one out, moved to second on an Adam Frost groundout and scored on a single by Ole Sheldon to give the Saints a 1-0 lead.
In the sixth Tripp's solo homer to left, his ninth of the season, gave the Saints a 2-0 lead.
The Explorers tied the game in the bottom of the inning when Jones doubled and moved to third on a single by Backman Jr. Schermerhorn made it 2-1 with a single to right. With one out back-to-back walks to Flowers and Bohn forced in a run to tie the game. Walker got a huge double play off the bat of Goodro to end the inning.
The Saints took the lead in the eighth on a two out solo homer by Mercado, his sixth of the season, to make it 3-2, but the Saints would lose just their second game of the season when leading after seven.
Walker went 7.0 innings allowing two runs on six hits while walking three and striking out four while Schumacher went 8.0 innings allowinbg three runs on seven hits while walking one and striking out five.
The Saints head to Sioux Falls Stadium for a three game series against the Sioux Falls Pheasants. The Saints send RHP Matt Long (6-5, 5.03) to the mound against the Pheasants RHP Kyle Ruwe (3-3, 5.40). The game can be heard live on Relevant Radio 1330.
