SERIES AT A GLANCE: The Flying Squirrels will seek a series victory when they take on the Trenton Thunder in the finale of a three-game series at Waterfront Park tonight. Last night, Johnny Monell went 2-for-2 and ripped a two-run double to left-center field in the top of the 12th inning, which scored Gary Brown and Daniel Mayora and lifted Richmond to a 7-5 victory over the Thunder. In addition to Monell's offensive heroics, Mark Minicozzi went 2-for-4 with a double, an RBI and a run scored and Brown and Juan Perez each collected two hits. Brett Bochy (5-2) worked two innings of scoreless relief to earn his fifth win of the season and Daryl Maday worked a scoreless frame in the bottom of the 12th to pick up his seventh save. Trenton's Michael Dubee (2-2) allowed two hits and two earned runs in one inning of work and was charged with the loss. The Flying Squirrels went 10-5 against Trenton in 2011 including a 7-1 mark at The Diamond. Richmond is 14-9 all-time against the Thunder and the club is 5-7 all-time against Trenton at Waterfront Park. The two teams will meet seven times in 2012, three games in Trenton and four games in Richmond.
The two teams split a four-game series at The Diamond over Memorial Day weekend.
TODAY'S PITCHERS: LHP Mike Kickham vs. RHP Adam Miller Kickham: Makes his fourteenth start for the Flying Squirrels tonight. In his last start, Kickham allowed five hits and one earned run along with two walks and five strikeouts and matched his season and career-high with seven innings pitched against New Hampshire June 14. He received a no-decision in Richmond's 3-2 triumph in 13 innings. Tonight's game will be Kickham's second career start against the Thunder. He is 0-1 with a 4.50 ERA against the Thunder. Kickham is currently tied for fourth in the Eastern League in walks (34) and his tied with four other pitchers for the league lead in shutouts (1). Last season, Kickham went 5-10 and posted a 4.11 ERA in 21 starts with Low-A Augusta. He entered the 2012 season ranked as the #20 prospect in the Giants farm system. As a professional, Kickham owns an 9-15 record with a 3.78 ERA in 37 career minor league appearances, including 34 starts. Kickham enjoyed a successful, albeit brief, career at Missouri State University, where he finished fifth in school history in single-season strikeouts (106) and won the team's Dave Dickensheet Pitcher-of-the-Year award in his lone season with the Bears. The St. Louis, MO native was selected by the Giants in the sixth round of the 2010 June Draft as a draft-eligible sophomore. He signed with San Francisco for a $410,000 bonus.
Miller: Makes his twelfth appearance and seventh start of the season tonight. Miller opened the season with Triple-A Scranton/ Wilkes-Barre, where he went 0-1 with a 4.50 ERA in five appearances. Since being transferred to Trenton, Mille has posted an 0-1 record with a 3.69 ERA in six starts. In his last start, Miller allowed six hits and one earned run along with no walks and two strikeouts in five innings pitched at Altoona June 14. He received a no-decision in Trenton's 7-6 setback. Tonight's game will be his third career appearance and his first start against the Flying Squirrels. Miller is 1-1 with a 10.80 ERA (2 ER/1.2 IP) against Richmond. He boasts a career record of 33-32 with two saves and a 3.72 ERA in 146 appearances, including 100 starts. He was originally selected by the Indians in the first round of the 2003 June Draft out of McKinney (TX) High School. Miller was signed by the Yankees as a minor league free agent on December 16, 2011.
EXTRA, EXTRA: Last night's ballgame was Richmond's tenth extra-innings contest this season, which is tied for the most in the Eastern League this season along with Akron, Trenton and New Hampshire. The Flying Squirrels improved to 8-2 on the season in extra-innings games with their 7-5 victory in 11 frames. Richmond's eight wins are tied with Akron for the most in the circuit.
Additionally, the Flying Squirrels and Akron share the top winning percentage (.800) in extra-innings games in 2012. Meanwhile, the Thunder fell to 6-4 in extra frames this season. Trenton's six wins are the third-most in the Eastern League this season behind Richmond and Akron.
HERE'S JOHNNY: Last night's 2-for-2 performance ended a prolonged offensive slide for Johnny Monell. Prior to last night's game, Monell was mired in a 4-for-47 slump (.085 AVG) with one double, three RBIs, nine walks and 14 strikeouts in a 16-game stretch (5/26-6/16). After entering the game as a defensive replacement, Monell went 2-for-2 with a two-run double, which proved to be the game-winning hit for Richmond in the top of the 12th inning.
ROCK, CHALK...: Richmond reliever Brett Bochy continues to thrive in his first season at the Double-A level. Bochy, a former Kansas Jayhawk, is now 5-2 with a team-high eight saves in 11 chances and a 1.62 ERA after skipping over Advanced-A San Jose.
Bochy worked 18 consecutive scoreless innings to start the season, which spanned his first 11 appearances. Eastern League batters are now hitting a paltry .147 (16-for-109) against Bochy this season.
